gonna call B.S. on this, unless there are some important provisions that they left out of the story.
as it reads, that means that of the 2 million people living in and around Vancouver, 625 people are expected to be hit by space debris?
in a city of 10mill, 3,100 people wold be hit by debris. shenanegans.

unless they mean if a piece is coming straight for you, there's a 1/3,200 chance that is doesn't get completely burned up by atmosphere. :noidea:

NASA officials say there has only been one case of a person being hit by space debris. In 1997, Oklahoma resident Lottie Williams was hit in the shoulder by a piece of metal the size of her hand while she was walking in a park in Tulsa. She was not injured.

so a: it seems the odds are about 1 in 7 billion
and b: she was not injured? tough broad.

I think in the vancouver area, youd have a better chance of being hit by falling babies

/fucking idiot parents!!!

The baby's tumble is the latest in a spike of infants falling out of windows, including:

• Aug. 11: Three-year-old boy falls from a second-storey window of a townhouse in Maple Ridge. The tot pushed through a screen.

• Aug. 8: Two-year-old boy falls from third-floor window of a Surrey townhouse. Also pushed through the screen.

• July 14: Two-year-old child falls from second-storey window in Sullivan Heights neighbourhood of Surrey. Also falls through screen.

• June 9: Five-year-old boy was playing on the third floor of a large house in South Burnaby, pushed through screen and fell.

• June 3: Two-year-old girl fell to her death from an eighth-storey apartment in New Westminster.

• June 3: In New Westminster a young boy fell from a third-storey window but landed on grass.

• May 22: A four-year-old girl fell almost four metres onto concrete from the second storey of her West Vancouver home.

• May 14: An eight-year-old boy fell from a fourth-floor window in Abbotsford.

That's a tough article to read, jstew, although it makes me relieved that my kids are old enough now to realize the consequences of such actions as well as being aware of their surroundings.

I see a developing trend here. Maybe screens just are not brick walls after all.

SO the odds of getting hit with space debris is 1 in 3,200, and the odds for winning any given states lotto is 1 in how many millions? I'm guess the Texas lotto's new saying won't be "You are 1000 times more likely to be hit by a falling satellite than to win our game".

Too many parents hiring Luongo to babysit this summer. Everyone knows he can't defend a 4x6 frame in critical situations, especially when there is a screen!

eventually, BobbyLou will pull a Buckner and catch one of those falling babies, thereby fully redeeming himself

That's very American of us to throw the shit into space and let it fall wherever it will. :L

I've got $20 that the original plan was for it to land in Africa but NASA realized they couldn't say that out loud.

I like this thinking - my garage may have some previously undiscovered space junk in it.
