Why did they take baseball out of the Olympics and keep "sports" like air rife shooting?

Also how do they decide what sports are in and what are not? Who makes the decision the IOC?

One last thing, What sports would you like to see added or deleted and why?

Side note: I read where Roger Goodell said he can see a time where American football will be an Olympic sport but I don't see that happening. IMO not enough countries play (or care) about American football and I don't see there being any competition for the Americans.

Thoughts?

"they" (being the IOC) say that softball and baseball dont have enough global reach ... personally i think they were trying to somehow pull MLB players into the Olympics so they could make money hand over fist (good luck with that btw)

Rugby and golf are in for 2016. Baseball was probably taken out because softball was, and softball was because it wasn't competitive.

The shooting sports, in my opinion, should stay. They're remarkable. Especially rapid fire pistol. Five targets twenty five meters away, and only eight, then six, then four seconds to shoot all of them.

I always thought baseball was played almost everywhere. I know the LLWS gets teams from all over the world but maybe I was wrong about it's popularity.

DS, You're a rugby player so you should be able to answer this. I thought there were different variations of the sport. How does rugby differ from Australian rules football? I know nothing about either sport, are they the same?

I see what you mean about Europe but baseball is also popular in central and south America.

Horse dancing and ping pong should be taken out. Golf should be added back in. Plus I think that competitive masturbating should be considered before the likes of fishing, poker, or cup stacking. At least it would be somewhat athletic...

It surprises me because the popularity of American football is way ahead of what I would think curling has world-wide. If it's based on 'competitiveness,' then let's take out mens and womens basketball too.

Rugby and Aussie rules football are different sports, and the Australians play both. They actually have a strong international rugby program. There are small variations in rugby laws from league to league and level to level, just like in most sports, for safety reasons, but the core rules are always the same. Play on your feet, don't tackle high, bind into the ruck from behind, straight puts to the scrum, etc. don't change.

In North America, American football is more popular than curling, but worldwide I would say no. Curling is a very popular sport in Europe and getting more popular in Asia as well (Korea and China especially)

I don't doubt that it's more popular there, but there's a reason so much money is made off of American football. I'm sure they know what it is in Asia, but I'm not sure of how many in North America know what curling is. This isn't really an argument that it should be in, because I agree that it would fail due to the lack of competitiveness. However, we already allow enough sports with similar issues in, which is what confuses me.

Cricket is reaaaaally popular in a lot of countries, so I could see that, but I think cricket games tend to run a bit long for the Olympics. Some of the high end matches are capped at 4-5 DAYS. They could do the shorter one-afternoon type matches, I suppose, but I wouldn't be surprised if some of the international folks got grouchy about it.
