Dan Marino files concussion lawsuit against NFL - ESPN

Interesting.

So either he was fired from CBS because he was going to do this or he is doing this because he no longer has ties with the NFL...... Either way, it makes him look like a tremendous asshole. Not only did he make a shitload of money from the league as a player, but he spent the better part of a decade (or more?) making even more money talking about the game. A game he 'now' says is flawed.

Never cared much for the dude and now I have another reason to dislike him.

He's been told he's not coming back (CBS) or he's just a dumbass. Probably both. If not I will miss the tension between Boomer and Dan. You had to enjoy the smug looks each gave one another.

He was already fired earlier this year. Sounds like a bitter dude.

Shit, That's what I get for listening to Lex and Terry on the way to work. They were talking he was going to be fired after this, as if he was still employed.

Also missed an opportunity of joyous celebration.:suds:

Anyone know why he was fired from CBS? I really like Marino, and I liked the cast with Marino, Cowher, Sharp and Esiason. Just curious if anyone has the scoop on why he was fired.

Giving Marino the benefit of the doubt I thought he was showing solidarity with former players and teammates who were all having the same issues.

Not sure what to take from his quick exit

Why can't he have played as a player, spent time and made money talking about the game, and then file suit for being lied to?

I don't see the contradiction.

Because of the last decade the man has made (probably) a fair share of money as a commentator of the game. He has, in effect, been a spokesmen for the NFL. I get the fact that a CBS employee doesn't 'technically' work for the NFL, but let's see what happens to any of these former jocks that work for the networks covering the NFL when they speak out against the shield.

It's one thing to say that 'in your time' you weren't aware of the risk because the NFL was hiding data. It's another thing to say that you continued to work for that enterprise (and profit) even when the findings were becoming clear.

Maybe it's not a contradiction.... But it's certainly hypocritical to continue to profit from an enterprise that you feel is engaged in lies.

Point is now moot....

Dan Marino: I didn?t realize I?d be listed as a concussion plaintiff | ProFootballTalk

Dan would like employment with one of the league's 32 franchises -- So Dan will not continue on the lawsuit.

BTW -- I find his explanation a little rich..... How is this guy letting anyone attach his name to anything?

He's a multi-millionaire..... He doesn't have lawyers for this? Even if he were looking to 'ensure' his family of being entitled to any benefits he should receive due to health changes related to his career, wouldn't he let this be set up by a professional?

Dan wasn't known as the smartest cookie coming out of Pitt..... Hard for me to imagine why he has suddenly taken such important and very complex estate planning matters into his own hands.

To be honest, even though I'm not a big Marino fan I always thought he was good in his role as a studio analyst...... The Boomer/Dan dynamic was awkward, but that probably has more with two tremendous egos. It's possible that the networks are becoming infatuated with the 'loud-talkers' that tend to offer more colorful and less insightful commentary.

I think he was basically replaced by Tony Gonzalez. It's always difficult to gauge how good an ex jock will be in a media role, but Gonzalez is a pretty safe bet. He seems like he could work in TV even if he wasn't a former NFL player.

Esiason is only average in the booth calling the game, but he's fantastic on their pregame show.

But he worked for CBS, not the NFL. CBS benefited from having a HOF on their network just as much as Marino benefited. And sure, CBS would cut anyone if the NFL twisted their arm because they'd have exponentially more to lose with losing favor with the NFL than they would Marino.

Correction: the NFL was engaged in lies. Not currently. That is what they're being sued for. For hiding pertinent information regarding the long term effects of concussions, etc. I don't see the hypocrisy. I doubt any player that's listed in the lawsuit hates the NFL or has a vendetta against them. The money won will go only to the players that are seeing those long term effects of concussions. The NFL - based on their past actions - are at least somewhat (to be determined exactly how much) responsible for the (brain damaged) players' conditions.

This hasn't trickled down to Mike Brown.

Do remember his odd press conference a season or two ago? He basically said there were no data to support that football head injuries led to later life difficulties. Hobson also wrote an odd article about it at the time..... Mike Brown doesn't speak very often - When he does, he normally has an agenda. I don't think in this case he was being a rogue owner. I think he was basically promoting the company line - One that he and the owners hope will ultimately cost less money in litigation.

They have nothing left to lose anymore by lying. If the judge accepts the lawsuit settlement (pending for close to a year now I believe), whatever study they hid for so long and still deny has anything incriminating will be locked into oblivion. Their lies will be protected. And I'm sure when the judge does accept the settlement, the propaganda machine will show its face again.
