One of my favourites growing up ( along with Miss Elizabeth (also deceased) who made the valet popular).

RIP Randy.

That actually bums me out a little bit. He was popular during the few years I paid attention to wrestling as a kid. He was very amusing.

*sigh* I remember when he took the ring bell and repeatedly hit Ricky Steamboat in the neck with it......

If i remember correctly he made it to AA ball with Reds organization as a catcher until he blew out a knee.

I was a fan of his brother too, "The Genius" Lanny Poffo...

RIP Macho Man

/So i just read the article and saw they mentioned Lanny, and i would have never recognized Macho in that current pic of his.

I met Randy and Elizabeth back in 1988. An old friend used to drive Randy to and from the Boston Garden when he came to Boston. I was a Macho Man fan so he invited me to go with him. When we got to the hotel, Randy had gone to a gym to work out so we sat around the lobby. While we waited, I met Hacksaw Butch Reed, The Honky Tonk Man and Jimmy Hart, The British Bulldogs, and a few others I don't remember off hand. when Randy got back, he was the nicest guy. We drove him, Elizabeth, and a friend of theirs to the Garden. We had to wait around until after his match was done and he was the headliner so he gave us tickets which were great seats. Driving to and from the Garden, we talked the whole time. That's when I learned he was a minor league baseball player for quite a few years (I believe he played 2nd base), but when he realized he would never make the big show, he began his wrestling career. He really took a liking to me because I knew so much about wrestling and it's history. It really sucks hearing this news. Randy was a class guy. RIP Macho Man :(

Edit: His real name was Randy Poffo and he was Married to Elizabeth before he became famous.

Was it as a catcher? I thought it was 2nd base, but it's been so long since I met him.

We were both mistaken.

After college, Randy was a minor league baseball outfielder in the St. Louis Cardinals, Cincinnati Reds, and Chicago White Sox farm systems. He injured his natural (right) throwing shoulder at one point so he learned to throw with his left arm instead. The team was managed by Jimmy Piersall. Randy's last season was 1974, when he played for the Tampa Tarpons.

Thanks Wayne. He played for Jimmy Piersall? He was a few bricks shy of a load...
