That's my point. It's because of people and the way they train, handle, or abuse their dogs that we have so many laws and restrictions over them. You go outside and see someone walking a dog every time.

How often are you going to see someone walking down the street or in the park with a chimp or a lion?

The people that do have exotic pets must go through a procedure and have proper living quarters for their pet. Most of the attacks by exotic pets are on their own owners, and not running through the streets attacking anyone at will.

I'm wouldn't call myself a dog person, but I like them. But if I walk into a friends house who has a pit bull, I can't help but shy away a little. It's the image they have, not saying its right, but still. Especially when it's someone who I don't know that well's house, like a friend of a friend.

Okay, I'm ready for the onslaught coming from you dog lovers now

My one friend growing up had an Akita. They had the dog for years, and we were always over there playing with the dog, and the dog never attacked anyone. My friend took good care of it and he was never abused at all.

Then one day one of my friends went over there, and as he went to the bathroom, the dog came out of nowhere, attacked him, and tore the hell out of his knee. He had to be rushed to the hospital right away.

Point is that even a domesticated dog in a loving home can attack without warning as well.

i'd take a lab or golden over a pit bull any day...

however i do believe many of the same premises that go for raising a lab follow suit for pit bulls, they are used less commonly..

being real some species have sunny dispositions, others can be more aggressive, but those dogs that need to be chained up are usually that way for a reason, whether it be abuse or maltreatment of any kind,
like i said before, i do believe that for the most part bad dogs aren't born they're made

In all seriousness Forty, I understand where you are coming from with the whole Pit Bull scenario. I have a Rottweiler who is as gentle a dog as you'll ever see. He lets my little nieces and nephews ride on him like an IPW and they tug on his ears and everything. It does bug me to know that if he were to run up to lick a little kid and knocked the kid over (by accident) that I could and most likely would get sued. Can you imagine if the kid were to get a concussion from the accident as well??? Meanwhile, if a Lab or a retriever did the same thing the parents would probably think it was funny or cute (unless the kid was concussed in which the parents would probably just yell at the owner).

In NY, where I am from, I have done research on pets and animals, as I wish to own one of these,
101_4746.jpg

I can't.
In NY state the only things that you can legally own, without having be part of a legal business, are domestic dogs, domestic cats, tank fish, and small birds. Shit, 2 years ago My harlequin macaw became illegal to purchase anymore, I'm grandfathered in though.
In NY anything other than regular domestics are illegal. Doesn't mean people don't buy and sell the other stuff though. I mean in the laws it specifically mentions tarantulas as being illegal, goto a pet shop, you can buy one.

My brother had an Akita, a 130lb one. It didn't trust me in his house, would follow me and lightly nip my shoes. My brother would stop him but thought it was funny. Then one New Years Eve it just walked by and bit me hard on the arm drawing blood. I can think of two other people who it bit,(including my mother who is no spring chicken) who according to my brother did something wrong to make it bite them.
Needless to say, I dont like Akitas anymore. The dog died (old age) so I won that battle.

just out of curiosity why did you want to get a pit bull?

Well, the first one is a pitbull-greyhound mix whom I rescued when his owner moved someplace where he was not allowed to have one. He was only a year old and had a great personality and I had wanted a medium sized, athletic dog that was good with family and friends and would play and wrestle and we just hit it off.

About a year later, I got divorced and it was just he and I in the house. He got down and stuff and would just wait by the door when I was gone at work all day. he had no energy and just akways seemed sad so I started looking into other dogs. When I would take him to the dog park, the pits that were there were the friendliest and most playful ones which made me really start to appreciate them. I did some research and found out that they were really really people friendly and thier history was based mostly on being family dogs because of this. Ihad owned Alsatians, Labs and Dobermans in the past but none of them had really bonded with me like the pit mix I had. They truly live to amuse and be with their owner. That is why they become good fighters, as they will literally do anything to make their owners happy and are very easily trained. Some assholes take advantage of this trait.

When i decided to get a second dog, I spent a lot of time going to shelters and stuff and doing meet and greets with my dog and he got along best with the Pits. One particular one from a rescue organization just hit it off perfectly with him. She had been a stray that was rescued from a kill shelter and then spent 7 months in 6 different foster homes so she was a bit shy. People want puppies and she was full grown. She was also not very big (35 pounds) so she just was not appealing to new owners. She was exactly what I wanted though, and she and Luke (my current dog) loved playing and stuff so I adopted her.

Since then, they are inseperable and constant playmates.

Pits, when raised right, are really awesome dogs and about as loyal and goofy as you will find. The backyard breeding of the giant mixed mastiff, bulldog, pitbull hybrids for looks and fighting have destroyed the image of the breed. Mos people do not even know what a real APBT looks like anymore. Pits are medium sized, athletic, slender dogs, not overgrown balls of muscle with stocky legs and giant heads. Those are "american bullies" and most of the time do not even have put bull in them. An example:

An APBT:

american_pit_bull_terrier.jpg

An American Bully:

jxaqr0nbbh.jpg

Neither of mine are docked or cropped, so they do not give off the pit bull look that much, but the one is a pure red nose.

It is really sad that most shelters are like 75% pits and people will likely never adopt them. i will probably own pits the rest of my life as I just love the personality and playfulness of the breed. Look online and their are some really good sources of info on them and how the image became bad.

Yeah, they are called Caracals. They are legal in all states but California and New York as they are classified as "Small Mammals."

Here's a kitten.

I have bobcats and lynxs all over my farm if you want one. We trap them now and then to get them away from livestock at breeding times, and it is a hassle that usually involves deep scratches and icreased heart rates....so if you want one,....by all means, come on by......ha ha ha!

I hear you completely. I do not take mine to the OLEA anymore because if the dogs start to play rough, you know who is going to get blamed. 90% of the owners there are cool and get it and love my dogs and know the difference between play and fighting, but that 10% scares the shit out of me,

I love Rotts and Sheps and Dobes as well...

Here is a fun story that took place in my area last week:

Bear-Bear, a brown and white husky that was about 3 years old, was playing in the Quail Run dog park at about 6:30 p.m., running off leash inside the fenced-in area, when the officer and his wife arrived with a German shepherd, who was kept on a leash. When the dogs began to play roughly, the federal officer asked Bear-Bear's guardian, his owner's brother, to call off the dog. But before he could do anything, the officer pulled out a gun and shot Bear-Bear, according to the husky's owner.

Yeah, my sister owns a Dobe and a friend of mine owns a Pit Bull. Both dogs are ridiculously friendly and playful. Nothing like the stereotype. I also know the difference between a real Pit Bull and a "Bully"......and the difference is astounding. I do feel your pain on the stereotype dogs ruining chit for everybody.

Funny story about my "vicious" Rottweiler. One day, when he was still a pup, I was wrestling with him and then got up and hid behind a table. He was trying really hard to get to me but couldn't so I was egging him on. I guess he hadn't realized (myself included) that he had officially gone through puberty and let out this loud, deep, throaty bark. After doing this very manly, dog bark, he got so scared that he ran and hid under my wife's bed. He thought another dog was behind him and barked, lol.

Yeah, I heard about that. They released the police report as well, and it looks like the officer may be getting investigated. It seems like a pretty disgusting act, IMO, but what do you expect from someone who takes a leashed dog into an off-leash park.

I would have assaulted the cop and gotten my ass kicked, but fuck that.

HA HA!

That is hilarious.

I was wrestling with these two and chased one under my desk. I accidently smacked my head when I was backing out and yelped (because it hurt) and they both ran and hid thinking theh had hurt me or something....born killers for sure.
