So I am watching this stuff on Animal Planet and I want to make sure I have this right:

1. In all 50 states you can buy and own a fucking chimpanzee, licensing is rare....

2. In all 50 states people can own 15-20 foot Buramese and Rock pythons....and because of this they have become indigenous to south Florida...

3. In some states, with a simple license you can own a FUCKING TIGER OR LEOPARD.

4. In 18 states, I still need to register my man eating dog, and in 29 counties I can not even have them in the car with me as I drive through!!!

5. The same dog that was used as a mascot for the US Army, became a staple in "Our Gang" and "Buster Brown" has been a war hero, has a better temperment rating that labs and golden retrievers, is used in search and rescue, border patrol and service dogs is now a liability to me when I am looking for a job in most major cities...all because of what....A DMX video or two???

Seriously....fuck that.....

In Miami, you can owna chimp, FUCKING TIGER or a python.....but not a medium sized working dog......

FUCK BSL

In Maryland at this time its not legal to own a monkey. My wife works at a vet that works on exotic pets and they do work on monkeys but they are all traveling from PA where its still legal.

anyone remember, about 2 years ago we had a thread in the swamp discussing that chimp that basically ripped some poor lady's face off, while the owner wouldn't do anything about it cause it would hurt the damn thing?

Thank God!!! When AP said that I almost fell off my couch.

It is not all bad. Abut 7 states have implemented laws into their state books that do not allow local municipalities or counties to label a dog as a "dangerous dog" and thus regulate their ownership based upon the breed in itself. They can only be labelled as "dangerous" if they have acted in an aggressive or dangerous way in the past. What a novel concept, basing the label on the actions and not the look. Fortunately, Pennsylvania (my current state) and Virginia (my home state) both have these laws.

(sorry for the rant but I am currently job hunting and running into this in a lot of cities...did you know that Boston terriers and French bulldogs are illegal in NYC!!!!....ha ha....watch your toes)

Chimps are wild and still have wild tendencies. Even chimps that come from zoo and ciscus lines are at most like 2 generations out of the jungle. Meanwhile, dogs have been domesticated for thousands of years and are so domesticated that the majority of breeds do not resemble their wild, distant cousins. Anyone who understands biology on any level knows the difference.

A tame chimp is still a fucking chimp....

There are terrible stories about attacking chimps. Remember the horrible story about the couple that were attacked at the chimp sanctuary? Male chimps when attacking males go for the eyes, genitals, and fingers first them go to work on the face.

EXACTLY...
those natural insticts may be supressed, but they damn sure aren't eliminated... and the other drawback is most dogs, while probably stronger pound for pound aren't about 4-6X stronger than humans.

do you really want something that can dismember you walking around your house?

My point as that there is a major difference between dogs and exotic pets. Dogs have been domesticated for thousands and thousands of years whereas these exotics are fresh from the wild.

Thats really odd....

If you have ver been to New York you KNOW that they can not possibly be enforcing these laws because you see those little rats everywhere (and pit bulls and dobermans for that matter). I just don't want to take the risk. I may call some of the local SPCAs for these cities and see if the laws are enforced....

i kinda cringed at the eyes, genitals, and fingers part......

eheheheeeww.

and no forty, i get what your saying, where the fact is that dogs have been domesticated forever, where as most of these other animals, with very light restrictions on them, haven't some even can't be (snakes)....
i guess i'll quote corky romano

That's the biggest problem with dogs however, is that humans domesticated them. There are over 4 million dog attacks on people every year, and at least 10-15 people per year die from being attacked by a dog.

I would think that you are more likely to get attacked by a dog than a chimp or a snake any day of the week.

Exactly. Sorry that I misinterpreted you. I always get a kick out of it when I go to the dog park or am walking my two Pits. I have tattoos and pit bulls so I always get avoided and glared at.

MEANWHILE, I have a PhD, fight infectious diseases all day, love french cooking, impressionist art and crooner singers......it is just funny to me :p

I was at an off leash park one day and actually had a guy talk to me for like 10 minutes about how he loves the park but always leaves when tattooed up guys come in with their pit bulls. One of mine came running up to me right on cue and I raised my sleeve to show him my tattooed up arm. The look on his face was priceless. he apologized and shit, but it was cool to catch him off guard. Now he and I talk it up every time I go back there.

Well yes, because for every chimp that is owned, there are probably 1 million dogs owned. You have to look at rates, not just raw numbers. How many people own chimps???
