I'm a fan of wood coasters myself. I don't have anything against metal ones, but they tend to focus on corkscrews and high right angle drops. Corkscrews don't really do anything for me, and I'm not a fan of 84 degree plummets. That said, I'd certainly ride a steel one if it was designed like an old fashioned wood coaster.

King Dominion used to have a stand up coaster called The Shockwave (The Shocker is a different ride alltogether) that beat the hell out of you, at least the first year it was opened.

I imagine a stand up coaster would be pretty rough. How'd the restraints work?
