No really, though, I was just curious. I always like hearing peoples theories. I also like to know what people think Hotel California is really about. I always thought it was about addiction.

I always though AP was about the apocalypse.

And what do you think it's about (besides the obvious part about Buddy Holly's plane crash)? The lyrics are notoriously cryptic and Don McLean refuses to say what his original meaning was.

For the most part it is about that. Just different referances to different artists and how music sucks now that music isn't the same without Buddy Holly et al.

But they also didn't know who Buddy Holly was or anything about the plane crash, so that's what annoys me mostly

That's probably because it doesn't have any deeper meaning.

By playing it coyly, he keeps people like you guys talking forever :D

Yeah but what about half the song that's rambling about kings and jesters and the holy ghost, etc? It gets a little nutty.

What else would it be about?

Some people think it's about a real place called Hotel California. Some people think it's a song about devil worship. I don't know, people are strange.

I grew up on Doors. My dad was a pothead (now retired policeman 30 years), my mom worked in a smoke shop in the 70's (now a Dental Hygienist). I had an interesting childhood from 71-78.

I heard "People are strange" at the beginning of the movie "Lost Boys." Great song, though I'm not the world's biggest Doors fan.

Jester-Bob Dylan
King-Elvis (duh)
The Father son and Holy Gohst-Buddy Holly, The Big Bopper, and Richie Valens (three guys who died in the crash)

The Rambaling is just references to different artists..

Also this is helpful to understand the lyrics more: https://www.cfa.harvard.edu/~jdevor/links/TheMeaningOfAmericanPie.htm

I'm sorry, I like you, but I reject your theory. And that page is full of nonsense!

"Well I know you're in love with him 'Cause I saw you dancing in the gym
Back then, dancing was an expression of love, and carried a connotation of committment. Dance partners were not so readily exchanged as they would be later. "

Come. On. That's not at all accurate.

Helter skelter in a summer swelter.
The birds flew off with a fallout shelter,
Eight miles high and falling fast.
It landed foul on the grass.
The players tried for a forward pass,
With the jester on the sidelines in a cast.

Now the half-time air was sweet perfume
While the sergeants played a marching tune.
We all got up to dance,
Oh, but we never got the chance!
`cause the players tried to take the field;
The marching band refused to yield.
Do you recall what was revealed
The day the music died?

We started singing,
"bye-bye, miss american pie."
Drove my chevy to the levee,
But the levee was dry.
Them good old boys were drinkin’ whiskey and rye
And singin’, "this’ll be the day that I die.
"this’ll be the day that I die."

Oh, and there we were all in one place,
A generation lost in space
With no time left to start again.
So come on: jack be nimble, jack be quick!
Jack flash sat on a candlestick
Cause fire is the devil’s only friend.

Oh, and as I watched him on the stage
My hands were clenched in fists of rage.
No angel born in hell
Could break that satan’s spell.
And as the flames climbed high into the night
To light the sacrificial rite,
I saw satan laughing with delight
The day the music died

He was singing,
"bye-bye, miss american pie."
Drove my chevy to the levee,
But the levee was dry.
Them good old boys were drinkin’ whiskey and rye
And singin’, "this’ll be the day that I die.
"this’ll be the day that I die."

I met a girl who sang the blues
And I asked her for some happy news,
But she just smiled and turned away.
I went down to the sacred store
Where I’d heard the music years before,
But the man there said the music wouldn’t play.

And in the streets: the children screamed,
The lovers cried, and the poets dreamed.
But not a word was spoken;
The church bells all were broken.
And the three men I admire most:
The father, son, and the holy ghost,
They caught the last train for the coast
The day the music died.

This part just makes me think of revolution, civil unrest, revolt, and the end of the world.
