I don't know the specifics of the thing because for the sake of my sanity I've tried to tune out all the Penn State/Syracuse/Jeff Sly pedophilia/bank robbery scandals. But the truth of the matter is that if you find something that very well could be evidence of a crime of that magnitude then you should provide it to the police if at all possible. ESPN isn't some random guy that witnessed a mob strike and was told his family would be killed if he squealed. They are a major news organization that (apparently? I didn't watch the political ad-esque video provided in the OP link) was given evidence of statutory r*pe. Give it to the cops. And none of this bullshit about needing corroborating testimony or witnesses. THAT is what isn't ESPN's job. That's the police's job, but ESPN didn't give them the tape right away.

Again, for me this is somewhat speculative given my lack of detailed knowledge, but if that's how it happened it's not really a room-for-interpretation type of case.

For what it's worth, I work in a profession that has a legal obligation to report any SUSPECTED abuse to the authorities. The idea being, let them sort it out. I understand not everyone or every company is held to that same standard, but many states do have such reporting laws making it illegal to withhold information about abuse.

This. It isn't ESPN's job to provide a full case to the authorities; that's what detectives and investigations and CSI: Syracuse are for. And while they don't have a legal obligation, you shouldn't need a legal obligation to do so. And I don't know how on earth a scandal story they would eventually be able to print that THEY COULD TRUTHFULLY CLAIM THEY BLEW THE LID ON would lose them money, anyway, so I'm really puzzled about this.
