Maybe the Ravens didn't want to sign him to this ridiculous contract? They were just matching Calgary's offer sheet...

LOL! :pizza:

QBs I'd rather have than Flacco:
Rodgers, RG3, Eli, Peyton, Wilson, Roethlisberger, Brady, Brees, Ryan, and Luck for sure (Newton and Schaub are close)

So, I think he is at the bottom or just outside the top 10. That makes this contract a little ridiculous, but I understand the position the Ravens are in. Contracts are always this weird dynamic of your career as a whole mixed with your most recent performance. You guys are right - he hit this at the perfect time. But was Flacco going to get this money from another team? Doubt it. Seems like they could have negotiated a little better.

I do hate when people equate wins and Super Bowls with how good a QB is. Peyton Manning is one of the best of all-time. Nobody will EVER put Flacco in that conversation. It's a team game and Flacco has benefitted from a great defense, a strong O-line, and good tools around him. I was impressed by his playoffs this year. But not "over $15 million" kind of impressed.

So on my facebook someone I used to work with posted "Finally they pay Joe like he deserves. Remember, he's won more playoff games than Johnny Unitas"

In a nutshell, this is indicative of why I hate the majority of Ravens fans. Willful ignorance, especially of history, bothers me. But anyway...

Good for Joe, actually. No, he's not worth it, and that place will eat him alive if he fails next year (IE: no repeat and MVP), but when the money is slid across the table, you grab it.

I actually like the guy. He has a good temperament and is hard to rattle. He'd make a heck of a goalie. But we need to get HBO on the line. Next year is going to be one hell of a Soap Opera. The old battle of player plays well, gets contract. Plays the same and is suddenly "not worth that kind of money".

Dan Marino. End of that argument.

Man, I understand the position the Ravens are in, but Flacco might be worth half of that contract. Might be.

I do understand taking the money when it's handed to you, but while this is happening Brady and Ben are restructuring their deals to make them cap friendly. Obviously that's not *bad* for them, they get more guaranteed, but it certainly puts things in perspective. And I agree with your list. Pretty solid. It just makes me laugh looking back that this is the same player that couldn't beat out Tyler Palko at Pitt...man.

Marino isn't the only one. Ken Anderson, Dan Fouts, Dan Pasterini, Bert Jones just to name a few.

Just because Trent Dilfer won a Super Bowl doesn't mean he was a great QB let alone a good one.

It IS possible to win in spite of your QB...of course in today's "DON'T YOU DARE TOUCH THE WR!" league, it's less likely, but still possible. I don't think the Ravens did win in spite of him, but I still maintain he's not elite. Doesn't change the fact that he won a Superbowl though, and nothing will...not even antler spray.

I like Flacco, I think he is good. I think he deserves a fat long term contract from the Ravens, he has proven himself reliable and earned it. But highest?? NOoooooooooooooooo not even. noooooo.. nononononono.

That's pretty much how I feel. Hes not my favorite and I don't know if I trust him long term but I feel he deserved a big long term deal. I also want to see more of him under the new coordinator, maybe Cam was a problem.

I also agree winning a SB does not make you a great player but post season accomplishments do factor in when contracts are negotiated.

Marino was a great QB better than a lot of SB winning QBs. However if I am picking the best QB of that era I am looking at Montana and Elway above him partially because of their post season success. Peyton is great no matter what but I think SB win does elevate him further.

It nice when players renegotiate for more cap friendly hit

Damn Kindle wont let me finish my post.

Its nice when players renegotiate for a more cap friendly hit but one needs a contract first. Brady is a good team player but its easier to make that deal after a decade of huge paydays than it is your second, first non rookie, contract.

As far as I know the structure of Joe's deal haven't been announced yet. Maybe its 80 million in year 1 then 40 over the next 5.

:)
