Maybe I was a bit too young to remember but this would be a great trivia question!

This Day in Buffalo Sports History: CFL vs. AFL

August 8, 2011 - 12:12 AM | Comment

August 8, 1961 -- For those seeking the oddest game in the history of the Buffalo Bills, this day featured the leading candidate -- in preseason, no less.

It was the day that the Buffalo Bills of the American Football League played the Hamilton Tiger-Cats of the Canadian Football League. It was the only meeting in history between teams from the two leagues.
The contest took place in Hamilton's Ivor Wynne Stadium before a crowd of 12,000 curious fans. The game mostly was played under CFL rules and was won by the Tiger-Cats, 38-21.

Prior to the explosion of the NFL in the early 70's, the salaries paid to guys in the CFL and AFL/NFL were very comparable.

/Why the Bills decided to go with Rob Johnson instead of Doug Flutie I'll never know.

Well Boss, we can't help it if you guys get tired on a wider longer field with one less down to make 10 yards...

And I posted on that thread, that if the Ti-Cats were given another down the final outcome would have been

Cats 100 Bills 42

The Bills couldn't find the 52 yard line.

By the way, Canada beat the US 28-22 in a rugby match on Saturday in Toronto...

Seems like you guy's always get the home field ! :)

There's a re-match coming up this Saturday in Glendale, Colorado. Final tune-up before the Rugby World Cup which starts next month in New Zealand.

Nice story Boss - it would be interesting to see it a rematch.
I think the respective players associations would be too afraid of an injury in a meaningless game though.

:jaw:

figured that had to be an epic upset, but it turns out Canada (16) is ranked above the US (17) in the world rankings

Actually, Canada has quite the healthy lead in rugby head-to-head matchups with the States (all-time 33-13-1 in favour of Canada)

I think so - Heck, Eric Lamaze was busted for cocaine and he's back competing for Canada (and winning equestrian titles).

Age is only a number my friend, so they say.

Yes it is. We went to HIPPIEFEST last night. I've seen a lot of rock shows over the years and this one is in the top three. It included a couple of R and R Hall of Famers. Dave Mason, Felix Cavaliere, who wrote for and sang with the Rascals, Rick Derringer, who wrote and sang Hang On Sloopy and plays the best guitar I've heard since Jimi Hendrix. Mark Farner from Grand Funk Railroad and Gary Wright, composer and singer of Dream Weaver. They came to entertain us and have fun and they had us dancing in the isles.
