The Olympic Club is absolutely pummeling these guys right now. It seems like 1 or 2 under par for 72 holes might actually win it.

Are people pulling for Tiger? Do you think he wins it? If not, who do ya got?

Any of our Northern California posters going to check this out? I went last year when it was at Congressional. Hands down the best sporting event I've ever been to.

Amateur Beau Hossler could make this VERY interesting. 17-year old just birdied the toughest hole on the course (#1) to become the leader.

But then he played the rest of the course. Although he's having a great Open so far. I hope Tiger blows up today. Go Jimmy!

Well the history of the US Open shows you're more likely to win with a score in the area of E than -8 or so. US Open champions will tell you par is a good score, on some courses a great score.

he got chewed up on the first 9 today.

Furyk has some work to do after that duck-hook.
I'd like to see some extra golf today :)

Anybody know if Simpson was named after Ty Webb? That would be pretty cool.

You asked the question, but something tells me you understand time zones. ;) Not the best finish. No Tiger in the mix, the winner sitting in the Clubhouse is never exciting, and the foursome playing behind Furyk and McDowell was upset they wouldn't let them play through.

Oh well - not a memorable US Open. Pretty beautiful course though.

Congrats to Webb. He's been knocking at the door for awhile now. Also, suck it Ireland!! ;)

No, I do understand that...but there had to be some delay, I imagine networks and the PGA wouldn't really enjoy one of the biggest events of their year ending that late, especially going against the NBA Finals.

If he was +70 in every tournament I would be happy. I do not want him to break Jacks record. he is not worthy

He's certainly worthy - the depth of the field in the PGA now is WAY better than it was 30-40 years ago. If he does it, he's the best. If he doesn't, he's not. I'm guessing it will be close either way. You can hate him as a human being, but he's an amazing golfer and the first billionaire athlete. He means more to his sport than any athlete in any pro sport ever has.

I kind of have to disagree on a few levels.

1) Tiger has done well against his contemporaries. Are they better and deeper than those that Jack faced? Jack Played against HOFers like Arnold Palmer, Lee Trevino, Gary Player, Johnny Miller and Tom Watson. Does that group compare favourably to the Mickelson, Singh, Els, Leonard, Garcia, Goosen and Cabrera group that has won/competed for majors in the Woods era. Depth was certainly lower in the Jack era, but top end talent was, IMO, much higher during Nicklaus's reign.

2) Michael Jordan meant more to his sport than Tiger Woods, IMO. There was, in fact, a report constructed that detailed Michael's un-retirement's impact on the economy. His comeback was worth something like $550 M to the US economy. Tiger Woods recent struggles amounted to nothing close to those kind of losses for the PGA Tour or his sponsors. Anecdotal evidence sure, but Tiger wasn't and will never be a Michael Jordan.

I think we kind of agree. I said whoever wins more will be the greatest b/c there are good arguments as to why each others era is the toughest.

I just don't agree. Magic & Bird had "saved" the NBA years earlier and basketball is a team game. He couldn't even win until Pippin (another HOFer) got there. I think Tiger is much bigger to the sport. People still tuned in to watch other teams in the NBA. The difference when Tiger is playing and not for the PGA is night and day. There are 25% more people that play golf today than 20 years ago. That's enormous. Did Jordan get 25% more people to play basketball? I would doubt that.

(Regardless - good arguments! :) )

Good counter-arguments!!

I think Jack is better (thus far) because when he didn't win, which he did more than Tiger, he was a top 5 participant.

As for the Tiger/Jordan thing I see what you're saying and you're likely right. I just can't believe that people are dumb enough to only tune in when Tiger is playing.

What can you say - people love dominance. Love them or hate them - more people watch when the Yankees are in the World Series. What can ya do.

As to Tiger, he's pretty consistant. Only 10 cuts missed in his career (absurd) and he's finished in the Top 10 in 171 of 269 tournaments. His 2000 will never be duplicated - 20 tournaments entered - finished top 25 in all of them, finished top 3 in 14 of them, and won NINE times. Insanity.

But I loved Jack, too. As a kid, I used to hit two golf balls in the back yard at objects and keep score - one was always Watson, one was always Nicklaus.
