Be it a basketball school or football school, Illinois' lack of being consistently good in either sport is rather shocking. Being close to Chicago, the nations third largest city and a huge basketball city, they haven't done much of anything in basketball. You'd think they'd be able to get enough decent in state talent to field a competitive football team.

But they've been atrocious in football for a long time.
They haven't done much since 2005 when it comes to basketball. And they don't even have the rich history they try to claim. It isn't like they have Indiana's basketball history.
