Apparently the option year is only guaranteed for injury and the team can cut bait if they player performs poorly

The Incoming rookies got thrown under the bus with the new CBA

Wait, we can cut people for poor performance? Are we sure the Bengals know this?

if players perform nicely, they usually can ask for more money so that doesn't work out so well.

Usually we reward suckage with a 4 year extension. Why do you think we are hopelessly over the cap? I'm surprised we can even afford the options on Zeitler and Dre.

If a team saw enough potential in 64 games to pick up the option year, I doubt they would cut a player regardless of their performance in 8 or so games.

The option year isn't for this season, but next season. Let's take RG3 as an example because he's an interesting case. The Redskins picked up his option for 2016. They now control his rights through 2016 because they exercised the option. If he returns to his rookie season, probowl form, the Redskins can keep him at 16 million dollars (the amount of money is based on the draft slot) next year. If he performs poorly they can decline the option after the season (it's only guaranteed for injury).

The Bengals get to make the same decision on Kirkpatrick after this year

The Zeitler was a no brainer. Dre is the gamble.

The only issue with RGIII is if he gets hurt (Not exactly known for his durability)..... What if he sucks and has an 'injury?' Who defines injury? Couldn't some docs say that his knee is fucked up?

I believe if he's not healthy enough they could carry him as injured reserve without much trouble.
