1916 Three fans at the Polo Grounds are arrested for petty larceny by the NYPD for keeping balls hit into the stands.

1924 In a matchup at the Polo Grounds, Giants' right-hander Virgil Barnes faces his older sibling, Jesse, marking the first time brothers have started against one another in major league history. Neither of Luther and Sade's sons will be credited with the victory, but Jesse will be tagged with the loss when New York beats his Braves, 11-7.

1938 Carl Hubbell notches his 200th victory as the Giants defeat the Cubs, 5-1.

1944 At the Polo Grounds with over 50,000 fans looking on, the New York major league teams play against each other in a six inning three-team game (a team played consecutive innings against the other two teams then sat out an inning). The contest, which was played to raise money for war bonds, ends with the final score of Dodgers 5, Yankees 1, Giants 0.

1946 After batting only .048 (2-for-48), Mel Ott decides to stop playing and only manage the Giants.

Here is another great moment in Giants history. It was on this debt back in 1970 that, in his 2,639th major league game, Giants outfielder Willie Mays singles off of Expos right-hander Mike Wegener for his 3000th hit. The 'Say Hey Kid' reaches the milestone in the second inning of San Francisco's 10-1 rout of Montreal at Candlestick Park.

Willie Mays was one of the greatest to ever play the game, and I count myself lucky to have seen him play as a kid.

There are currently 28 guys in the 3000-hit club. At the time Mays did it, he was the 10th, and only two guys had joined the club since 1942 : Stan Musial and Hank Aaron (earlier that same year). At the time, Aaron and Mays were the ONLY players to have 3000 hits and 500 HRs. In the last 42+ years, only two other players have accomplished that feat : Eddie Murray and Rafael Palmeiro (Bonds missed it by so little : 2935). Murray and Palmiero have both fewer hits AND fewer HRs than Mays. In the 120+ years of organized, pro baseball, only 11 players have more hits than Mays. Aaron is the only player to have both more hits and more HRs than Mays (but I think A-Rod will pass Mays sometime in his next 100 games). Aaron didn't have Mays' speed, nor his defensive skills.
