20w50 is a racing oil or used in extreme heat conditions.
Most new cars now call for 5w20 because of tighter tolerances, better technology, and improved parts.

That's why you can now go longer between oil changes. It's the contamination from combustion that gets past the rings that fucks your oil up mostly.

I always wondered if that purple shit does anything? I forget what it's called, but they sell one bottle for your oil and another to pour in the gas tank. I imagine there's a 90% chance it does nothing.

Gas additives do nothing.

^ No, I was thinking of "ZMax." It only took me 3 days to think of the name of the shit. :L

That's one of those "micro libricants" that supposedly is thin enough to get into the metal and slick it up.

I actually pulled my fuel injectors out of my old F150 a few years back. Never added anything to the tank. 175,000 hard miles on cheap gas. Clean as a whistle.

Engines now days are designed and built better than they were 20 years ago.

My 5.0 computer calculates oil life according to driving habits. I usually change mine around 25% oil life which has been around 6K-7K miles. I get the engine hot and then let it drain for about an hour. Takes 8 quarts of Mobil 1 Synthetic and a WIX filter and it's good to go. I use this opportunity to clean the CAI Filter and rotate the tires.

3,000 miles is for oil service shops to get frequent repeat customers in and out the door and make money. Check your oil every weekend and don't drive like an asshole and your engine will last 200,000 miles or more.

Do you have a high-capacity pan on that thing? My Excursion 6.8L V10 only holds about 6 quarts. I was getting ready to get one of those nifty finned aluminum jobs that holds a ton of oil and read a report by a Ford engineer on the Ford-trucks.com forums and he said they did all kinds of tests and believe it or not, those high-capacity pans not only didn't reduce oil temps but in allot of cases actually increased temps!

No doubt holds benefits for oil but not gas. Know a guy who was a GP1 mechanic for years and he said if you ever buy a gas additive, the best way to use it is to pour it out on the ground right before adding it to your gas.

I'm with everyone here... Changing around 3-4000 miles is a myth. I personally use high mileage filters at a little bit extra cost, but I go about 10k-15k between oil changes. I could probably push it past 15k if I needed to. I use Pennzoil... Never had a problem with any vehicle.

Depends on the reason for the additive. If you are adding it to get water out (alcohol) or to help offset the shitty ethanol (stabil) then it has a purpose. If you are cleaning your injectors, yeah it isn't gonna do anything.

Deep sump oil pans are stock on most V8 sport cars. The Boss 302 and GT500 Sumps have an even higher capacity. Some cars use a dry sump system where oil is stored in a different location and has two pumps to send oil to the engine and back to the oil pan. I think the C6 Corvette dry sump system holds something like 10 or 11 quarts of oil.

Along the lines of additives, SeaFoam is good stuff...but not through your gas or oil. Works great every 100k to send through a vacuum line to clean out the top end. Makes a hell of a lot of smoke, but will burn up any deposits or gunk sitting in the combustion chamber.

Yeah I wait for the 5000 mark now a days also. Your just a sucker for the hype to do it sooner.

not really hype, if you have a manufacturer warranty and dont have proof of oil changes every 3K that 3000.00 timing chain job may not be covered.

Oil used to change with the seasons, but the biggest change in actual oil is they stopped putting the molybdate in the oil, thats the gunk that helps the oil stick to the metal parts and not run off into the pan, so cold starts that used to be protected are no longer protected. EPA outlawed it with the air pollution scam that also worked to get more new cars sold. If you can get some, you can go 15000 no problem, but until then, the oil is cheaper, breaks down faster and needs to be changed more often.

Absolutely agree! I did it to my 1990 Suburban 4x4 (4" lift sitting on 35" BFG All Terrains). Got her dosed up real good at my office and proceeded to pull out to go around the block a time or two and a cop pulled me over and asked to see my smog certificate cause so much white smoke was pouring out of it.

What is a smog certificate? We have an inspection sticker and that's it.

Shows your readings on all the individual metrics and overall score.

Sounds awful. We used to have emissions tests that looked for that, now they just plug into the OBD and if no check lights or error codes are thrown...good to go.

an inspection?

what kind of fascist dystopia do you live in?

Where I live I don't have to pass any such inspections.

But if I move 1 county over I will.

I just moved from Cali, so I just passed one less than a year ago however, so it's not a big deal to me. Just something I noticed when I changed my tags over.
