The Philadelphia Flyers announced today that they have signed 6’2’’, 203-pound free agent right wing Nikolai Zherdev (NIH-koh-ligh ZHAIR-dehv) to a one-year contract, according to club General Manager Paul Holmgren. Per club policy, financial terms were not disclosed.

“Nik is a highly-skilled player who, at 25-years-old, we feel will be a good fit to our core of forwards,” said Holmgren. “Prior to playing last season in Russia, Nik ranked as one of the top young point-producers in the NHL. We are pleased to add him to our team.”

Zherdev, 25, appeared in 52 games with Atlant-Moscow of the Kontinental Hockey League in 2009-10 where he recorded 39 points (13G,26A) and 79 penalty minutes during the regular season. He led the team in penalty minutes (79), while also finishing second on the team in assists (26) and third in points (39) this past season.

In 2008-09, his last season in the National Hockey League, he recorded 58 points (23G,35A) and 39 penalty minutes and appeared in all 82 regular season games with the New York Rangers. He led all Rangers in goals (23) and tied for the team lead in points (58), while finishing second on the club in assists (35).

Over parts of five seasons in the NHL with the Columbus Blue Jackets (2003-04 to 2007-08) and Rangers (2008-09), Zherdev has compiled 239 career points (99G,140A) and 203 penalty minutes in 365 regular season games. He has also appeared in seven Stanley Cup Playoff games, going scoreless.

A native of Kiev, Ukraine, Zherdev was selected by the Blue Jackets as the fourth overall pick in the 2003 NHL Entry Draft.

gagne was out of town either way. even without zherdev they needed to move gagne to fill out their roster.

i think if zherdev gets around 3 mil it is a good deal.

I can't imagine that. This isn't Jonathan Cheechoo we're talking about here. Gagne hasn't faded into nothing. He's coming off a postseason in which he scored 9 goals in only 19 games and should still have decent value.

If he doesn't waive his NTC, there are other players that could be traded.

By my numbers, if Gagne is moved and Boucher is moved or bought out, that leaves around $5 million to sign Turco (or whichever goalie you're going to sign) and potentially Powe/Carcillo.

That is very reasonable.

I think with this signing we'll have the most depth on offense and defense. Now if we could just get a DECENT goalie to compete with Leighton for Gagne we'lll have depth all around. This team keeps getting better and better. I was excited last year when we got Pronger but man...I cant wait to see this team hit the ice. Full season with Leino, Giroux stepping up, and hopefully Carter staying healthy. Our third pairing being solid, we should definitely not have a weak ass regular season like last year.

i just did the numbers. i signed powe for the same price and put nodl and testwuide as healthy scratches just for their cap numbers. also i had 7 defensemen. we are 1 mil under the cap without gagne. not enough for a goalie.

Confirmed: Zherdev's salary is $2 million. Not a bad price for his talent. Needs to put it all together. Just leaves a lot of questions now.

oh and just a pre-emptive strike.. now that we have a nik.. i dont wanna hear 'just in the nik of time' whenever he scores.. the caps color guy does that (when backstrom scores) and it drives me fuckin crazy
