The United States gives Egypt over 1.3 billion dollars annually. This crap needs to stop. We need to take care of our own problems before we give any other country anything.

Egypt is second only to Israel in giving money to the United States...if I remember correctly.

What I want to know is what the heck do they do with it. The people have nothing. Mubarak & his cronies are obviously robbing the country blind. The youth of the nation is behind these protests. They're sick & tired of not being able to find a job.

As much as anderson cooper gets hated on, you have to give him props for heading right to the epicenter of the action and showing whats actually going on there

Not trying to turn this into another political nonsense, I am completely neutral and could care less what the left or the right think

It's high time the U.S. government, and other western organizations/agencies, stopped defending these despots in the middle east. It foments anti-US sentiment in the short term and swings the political pendulum too much.

Mubarak has to go but the anti-American backlash of their having defended TERRIBLE Egyptian regimes will be that whenever Mubarak is ousted he will, in all likelihood, be replaced by some fundamentalist asswipe.

It's time for the US in particular, and the west in general, to let these people do their own thing for better or worse.

/End rant

We've been funding him to the tune of $1.3 billion/year... not a good look, especially with our own crumbling infrastructure.

And when that worse is whoever's in power cutting off the west's supply of oil, then what?

Nasty times we're living in.

That eventuality should be considered. Oil should not be, ever be considered to be, a deterrent towards the development of worldwide democracy.

Since when has Egypt had a considerable reserve of oil anyway?

Never sniffed the top 10 in known reserves.

Two words: Suez canal.

Fine and dandy.

1) Why the reliance on middle-east oil?

2) Ignoring question # 1: why does it need to flow through the Suez Canal?

3) Even if the above 2 questions are answered with justification, why does the United States deem itself to be the entity that is entitled to riches of the middle east?

These are staggering figures.

Why is Egypt deserving of such generosity when their leader is , and has been for years, a ruthless despot?

1.) Because the left-wingers in the United States don't want America to drill on its shores, don't like dirty coal and don't like nuclear power plants.

2.) Isn't the only alternative to go around Africa? I thought the lowest tip of Africa was exceedingly dangerous due to storms and such.

3.) Well, being an American, I sorta want what's best for America. I hope the same holds true for Canadians and Canada, Chinese for China, etc. Anyway, if USA had done my point 1, maybe America wouldn't be in such a mess.

1) Americans, and Canadians, have become WAY too energy reliant; that in itself is fine but that reliance has become a reliance on petroleum. The people, who are the essence of democracy in the USA don't want to soil Alaskan territory. That is their right.

2) Yes. The shortest shipping route (outside of the Suez Canal) is to go around Cape Horn. Cape Horn is not that dangerous. It is longer though.

Not propping up backwards and dangerous regimes like Mubarak does not, however, mean that the Suez Canal would be closed to American commerce. I fail to see how supporting a regime that depresses equality and democratic expression of speech somehow opens the Suez Canal.

3) How does supporting repressive regimes encourage trade with the United States (America, BTW, has NOTHING to do with your country)?

I love the USA as a Canadian who has family in the US. The last 30 years of US foreign relations have made me distance myself from the US government. IN no way do I believe that the American government has done justice to their people over the last 4 decades.

I just hope that one day I can look at my American family (and friends) and say that their GVT is representing them.

Because Egypt is the only ally Israel has in the Middle East.

The Suez Canal is also a big factor. All Oil must go through it to get to where it needs to go.

I hate getting political but the Department of Energy was formed in the 70's with approximately 120 members. Their goal was to brainstorm and reduce our dependence on foreign oil.

Fast forward to 2011, the department now has over 15,000 employees and we are more dependent on foreign oil than ever. This is a good example of big government at work.

This country needs to focus and do it soon. Like another posters said "Suez Canal", If Egypt is controlled by extremist and the canal things will NOT get better.

End of my political rant\
