Reedy reports that Josh Brown, Neil Rackers and Billy Cundiff are all coming in for a tryout tomorrow. Apparently Mike Nugent sprained his vagina on the way to work.

Can you imagine Neil Rackers lining up for a crucial kick in PBS? The same stadium that almost ruined his career before it really started?

What about Cundiff? That guy was a great kicker that blew it big time in a big moment. Would you trust him at the end of the game?

Nugent is terrible.

In the last 6 NFL seasons, he has kicked and made SIX 50+ yard Fgs.

He is about the most average, not special kicker in the NFL.

He was accurate last year, But so what. Anyone can be accurate if they can not kick or attempt longer field goals to extend a teams scoring zone.

to give you an indication of how bad he is, Over the last 6 NFL seasons janikowski has kicked and made 49 50+ yard FGs.

Rackers has 20 50+ yarders

Shayne Graham has nine. And he is awful. NUgent...If you guys were not OSU homers, you would say he fucking sucks, like he fucking sucks

Who said Nugent was good? I hate OSU.... And I think Nugent is an average kicker.

But I'm not very confident in the other guys that are coming in. They have some skeletons in the closet. Then again, I'd take Brown, Rackers or Cundiff over the last replacement we had for Nugent - Clint Stitser.

ANYONE but Billy Cundiff. ANYONE.

I would be ok with the resurgence of Neil Rackers in Cincy. I feel like he learned to kick when he was in Arizona.

Rackers just had his confidence killed by the horrible turf experiment at PBS. Just not sure how he'd react to being back.

No offense or anything, but you really really suck at using stats as you've shown the last few days.

Sheer number of FG's made do not tell any story. You can only make as many as you take. In 2 of the last 6 seasons, Nugent attempted exactly 0 FG of 50+ yards. And really, I don't care what he's done anywhere else. Here, he's only attempted a total of 6 and made 3.

And btw, Janikowski has not made 49 50+ yarders in the last 6 seasons. That's how many he's ATTEMPTED.

Something is odd about those stats..... The glossary says its FGM, but if you add up the categories it sums to FGA.

Ya, I realized that.

NFL has it right, ESPN has it mis labeled. He made 30 50+ yarders in the last 6 years.

The BEngals can not even really attempt long FGs with Nug...he doesnt have the leg

Even you go into ESPN's player statistics, it'll show you FGM and FGA for each range.

However, because 1) there is no cap on the high end of "50+", and 2) in the 50's range is the high for most FG kickers, if you want to compare one players 50+ made/attempts, you have to factor in the actual yardage of those kicks.

E.g. If Kicker A is 0/2 on FG attempts of 57 and 59 and Kicker B is 2/2 on FG attempts of 51 and 52, there is no definitive conclusion you can make regarding which kicker is better.

The best place to start is find 1) the average yardage for every attempt 50 yards and higher, 2) the average yardage for makes 50 yards and higher, and 3) the average yardage for misses 50 yards and higher. But even this may not be conclusive as the sample sizes are small for most players which leaves a lot of room for skewed data.

Imo, the best way to judge kickers is their percentages from 0-50 yards with more weight going to the longer kicks. FG percentages in the 4th quarter, game winning situations, and especially the playoffs. If you need tie-breakers start looking at 50+ yards. And you automatically eliminate anyone who is less than competent at 50 yards.

The obvious exception to all of the above is for kickers like Janikowski who make 5 50+ yarders a year. Teams are obviously more comfortable taking those long FG risks with the best kickers. With an average kicker, teams are more likely to decide to punt on a 53 yarder to try to play the field position game.
