cool

how does that compare to nuclear power?

I have friends who have gone from nuclear to coal plants and they say it is night and day.

nuclear will have multiple groups for engineering while a coal plant will have maybe a total of 5 onsite.
Coal plant fly ash coats the surrounding area in radioactive dust. They emit 100x more radiation than a similarly generating nuclear plant.

And the remaining fly ash that doesn't escape is a radioactive mess for disposal.

coal is never making a comeback and there is no such thing as "clean coal"

Natural gas plants are a bandaid until the SMRs get built.

I am aware, thank you.

but meeting and maintaining those regulations costs money and if it takes 20 yrs for a plant to make money, what company would ever make that investment?
it doesn't take 20 years for it to make money and building 1 or 2 sites in a region with 3 or 4 reactors operating eliminates the need to operate the coal and other types which saves a ton of money on the constant operating and maintaining cost of those sites + the buying, shipping and maintaining storage facilities for their fuel

the two latest reactors built at Vogtle cost $30B.

20 yrs might be a rough estimate, but it isn't far off.

you really don't know what you are talking about here.

seeing as I work at a plant that backed out of building a 3rd reactor for that reason, I am pretty sure I know what I am talking about.

U.S. nuclear electricity generation capacity peaked in 2012 at about 102,000 MW when there were 104 operating nuclear reactors. At the end of 2021, there were 93 operating reactors with a combined generation capacity of about 95,492 MW.

well i worked in the nuclear industry for more than 22 years working with power companies all over the US and multiple other countries and we found that most that planned on building or adding to existing sites did so more because of the public outcry than the cost.

how much do you think it cost to build the multiple non-nuclear power plants needed to increase the power output needed to meet the increasing demand including the infrastructure and maintenance to keep them operating when compared to the cost of building 1 multi-reactor plant?

Interesting discussion. I appreciated you guys sharing your knowledge and experience. Nuclear is a good temporary fix for energy issues. I think i have found the final answer though. Let me know what you think about Fusion.

All opinions welcome as well

Up here people are up in arms about decommissioning our old nuke that Holtec is doing.

There is absolutly NO way to safely collect, move and store nuclear waste.

Some of us recall the spring of 1979.

Yup and a million gallons pumped into Cape Cod bay
it sounds like they are looking to discharge the water that is currently in the reactor cooling system or in the spent fuel pool once they remove the fuel from whichever location it is in while it cools down. It is most likely it is in the spent fuel pool and they will be transferring it to dry storage on site soon.

and any radiation in that water will be minimal...and literally a drop in the ocean.

I agree dilution is the solution but try to convince them.

Fusion is great if they can figure it out. There are a couple multi country projects going on right now trying to figure it out.
Sounds like they got it mostly figured out but is a good 15 years away.

Fusion Energy Is Coming, and Maybe Sooner Than You Think

There is a short cut too. They can start with He3. The moon and Mars is covered with that shit. With all the rockets we are sending out there it does not sound too hard to bring it back.

Not necessarily...but from the sounds of it they won't let them do anything irresponsible with the water. They are allowing them to be in on all the tests and whatnot...nothing is being hidden
