... but I agree.

Boston Bruins' Shawn Thornton: Don't blame game for deaths - ESPN Boston

Some have even suggested that fighting should be banned from the sport, but Thornton is not among them.

"No. No. And it kinda f------ pisses me off that people take this opportunity to try to exploit a certain part of the game," Thornton said. "Those are very sad instances and I don't think exploiting a part of the game is the right way to go. I think we should remember the people as the men they were and not what they did for a living."

I love the sport of hockey... even if it was just the "game" itself. But fighting has been a part of hockey for a very long time here in North America. These men obviously had some other issues.

Clearly! But it would be ignorant not to examine some aspects of fighting (as it was something in common for all three), just like it would be careless for the NHL not to look at depression, pain killers, and career transition.

I don't see how exploring the issue is "exploiting" anyone (I'm not even sure Thornton knows what that word means). And while I totally understand if people just like fighting, something being around for a long time is a poor argument.

this

what sticks out to me is what DS said a while back about drug companies and what theyve done with their painkiller formulations the past 25 years

Time to start testing players for painkillers then. If a player is in that much pain, he has to sit out. Regardless if he is worried about losing his spot on a line. I've dealt with a shit ton of pain in my life... I am extremely sensitive to painkillers, I take nothing. When I had shoulder surgery, I just dealt with the pain, not one painkiller. That shit turns me into a drooling junkie.

Theres to much passive blame when it comes to shit like this. People have willpower. Its just a matter of common sense.
