I disagree with your conclusions based on your numbers because of #1 in the bolded. I don't believe that we would have tired their defense out, because the only way we could move the ball (and extend drives, thus keeping them on the field) was to throw the ball. When you average 2.2 YPC, you don't get a first down running the ball, the defense gets off the field, and they get to rest. We simply couldn't run it. Our line is incapable of run blocking, and when they do manage to create a hole, our backs usually miss it unless it is Grand Canyon sized (like against Minnesota).

As for #2, I don't think they forgot, I just don't think they are very good at it. Having Abdullah in the backfield can cover up a lot, but we all saw how often he had to make a play entirely on his own as a result of the O-line not blocking well.

At the half Newby was averaging 4.6 yards per carry and that was when Riley said he had determined we couldn't run the ball.

Tommy ran 12 times for 13 yards, which is what carried that YPC down so far. The 2.2 stat is deceiving. We were running the ball with ease in the 1st half, I still don't understand why he said that at halftime.

Newby was hurt and hardly played in the second half. All together including Newby, we were only at like 3.2 YPC, and then we didn't have Newby available.

I'm on my phone so I don't have the breakdown in front of me, so that 3.2 number is a guess. It wasn't an overwhelming number by any means though.

Yea I just didn't understand the halftime comment.

Didn't make sense to me. I literally was looking at the stats at halftime thinking, "wow, we're running the ball pretty well....." right at the same time that Riley said, "we can't run the ball at all right now, we're gonna have to pass more in the 2nd half."

With all that said, I thought our 2nd half playcalling was good. It was in the 1st half on the 2nd and 2 and the 2nd and 3 both in NW territory where we passed on both 2nd and 3rd down that gave them the game.

That number is right on. We ended up 3.3 I believe after Tommy went forward and backwards so many times that his numbers ended up 12 for 13 yards.

Or actually I think Newby ended up 3.3 by himself.

Team was 2.2 if I remember right. That included a couple of negative runs by Pierson-El, and then of course Tommy's stats.

But yea, those 2nd and shorts that we blew. Those are what I will continue to point back to.

25 minutes into the game Northwestern had 1 first down to our 11 first downs.......yet we trailed 14-5 on the scoreboard.

Those two drives we blew by not converting first downs on 2nd and 2 and 2nd and 3........those flipped the score by anywhere from 13-21 points in favor of NW. At the very worst we get 2 field goal opportunities out of those drives........and NW doesn't get the pick 6.

I just don't remember Janovich getting any carries in the NW game ~ I could be wrong of course as I'm prone to be so, but the fullback carries seemed to have gone away without any logical reason. If I'm right about this, it is another mystery AND why many of us are shaking our heads in total disbelief about the play-calling. I wish (in vain) that his staff would bring back the old counter trey that the Washington Redskins borrowed from us. To me (and possibly only me) this staff looks at running the ball as a chore. It also could be that they want to pass more than run as proof that the QB recruits will be here to pass the ball first and hand off second ~ just a thought.

Where are you getting your numbers R_A? I just took mine off the play for play on Espin. By that Cross was 3 carries for 1 yard in the first half and 5 for 17 in the second. Of course this method requires my math to be good. I think it was.

RA's numbers add up to well over 100 yards rushing, which we all know Nebraska was under 100 for the day.

So he had the wrong game.

These 2 teams are awful. Nebraska has no defense and NW has a good defense but a QB that can only run the ball.

Felt like I was watching a football game in slow motion

It appears so.

I just went back and checked the ESPN box-score again, and that's not what I was looking at the first time. :noidea:
