Time to look at the draft.

Also, they change the lottery rules with the CBA, now any non-playoff team has a change at #1. It's a scaling system, below are the percentages:

30th place: 25.0%
29th place: 18.8%
28th place: 14.2%
27th place: 10.7%
26th place: 8.1%
25th place: 6.2%
24th place: 4.7%
23rd place: 3.6%
22nd place: 2.7%
21st place: 2.1%
20th place: 1.5%
19th place: 1.1%
18th place: 0.8%
17th place: 0.5%

As of this exact moment, the Devils are in 21st.

Hypothetically, if we were to win the lottery, I'd say there's about a 105% chance Lou takes Seth Jones. Best player on the board is Lou's motto, and he's the clear number 1.

O and its fucking stupid to take Jones with the #1. This team needs a scorer or a Goalie. There has to be a reason why kinkaide ain't getting any time now.

When is Lou going to address the goalie issue? June 30th at 11:50 2014?

Also let's not forget that the team is losing a pick next year. I would look to move the pick and drop back a little bit stay in the top 10. Maybe get a teams #1 next year or a top prospect either a Goalie or a forward. Then Lou can draft his fucking defenseman at 10!

If Jones is as good as they say I wouldn't be upset taking him at all. If nothing else it makes guys expendable, and having a D corps of Jones, Larsson, Merrill for the next decade would make us contenders every year.

Ideally, I agree though, if we got the number 1, I would prefer to flip it to whoever has the 3 or 4 pick. That way we get a big time scoring prospect along with most likely another good pick or a prospect.

Only issue is we will be the reverse of the oilers. They take the best forward all the time and look at their d. We would be great on d. But 2 problems we should be building around Kovy. Amd second d takes longer to develop.

Any hoot, I'm good with Seth cause he actually has a nice hard shot... i'm not too familiar with the other prospects as I am with Seth and a few others.... so it would be hard for me to judge...

i didnt realize that seth jones was black? book it the devils if they can fall far enough like say the 5-6 area they will win the lotto and take seth jones. not saying its the right move but its a move that the nhl would love.

Jones is also American and Lou loves his Americans. I love how we're talking about this like it's going to happen. If we sniff the top 5 I'll be ecstatic. Apparently you're still good outside of the top 5.

Look at the year Larsson went, guys like Dougie Hamilton and Couturier are solid, solid players that weren't top 5 guys.

its a total crap shoot of who turns out studs and duds. but odds are better if your picking at the top. dougie hamilton is a perfect example of trading down i hope the devils do look into that option and not just go for the "experts top picks"

i saw that too. crazy that last year we were thin at center and now we are loaded. i would be fine bringing in a center that can SCORE more then setup plays. also being good on a face off would be nice.

maybe look to move zajac down the road if we can if he doesnt step up his game

Now I'm really going to start reaching with these hypotheticals, but if we wound up getting say the 7th or 8th pick, I think we could potentially move some pieces to move up.

Let's say Edmonton gets the 3rd or 4th pick, Seth Jones is already gone, they have enough young forwards already, maybe swap our first, a guy like A-Train/Tallinder since they desperately need D, and then misc picks/prospects to get their pick.

This would also allow us to use our buyout on somebody else. Free up more cap space and get a high impact draft pick. I don't think it's that unrealistic.

I doubt you'll see us use a buyout. Frankly, except for Zajac and Kovalchuk (can't imagine either of them getting bought out). Only candidate is Volch, which I still doubt. You need to bring in another defenseman to replace him which would prob cost a similar amount. Who knows?
