I guess a photo with Puck Daddy at a bar was his undoing...

Wyshynski has been highly critical of Peel’s work on his popular Yahoo! Sports blog in recent years and the two met at a New York City bar to air their differences. In addition to the photo, Wyshynski wrote a post detailing the meeting and laid out some of the history that led up to it.

“After about 90 minutes, I walked out of the bar into a snow shower,” Wyshynski wrote. “I hoped Tim got whatever he was looking for out of it, because I know I did: a little better understanding about the man and his mistakes, a new perspective on our criticism of them. And, well, this photo.”

It is believed the NHL was concerned about the optics of the men toasting one another, especially if Peel was on the wrong side of a bad call in the Devils-Penguins game the following night.

He got suspended for the wrong reasons - should have been suspended for his incompetence, not having a shot with a blogger

Getting harder and harder to defend the crap Puck Daddy is putting out there. I used to enjoy the stuff he wrote about but now I just feel like he's trying to insert himself as the NHL gossip writer.

He's a dipshit. Most bloggers are, though.

Having said that, this is ridiculous. A grown man can't get a drink?

A little more info regarding the Peel - Puck Daddy meeting;

During their meeting, Peel is said to have admitted to some blown calls on the ice and why he made them.

The first incident was a diving penalty on Anaheim Ducks defenceman Sami Vatanen earlier this season. According to Wyshynski, Peel skated to the Ducks bench the next time he officiated one of their games and apologized for making a mistake. Apparently, he felt compelled to make the call because the NHL wanted a crackdown on diving.

The second incident was a four-minute roughing/holding penalty assessed to Washington forward Alex Ovechkin. Peel is said to have told Wyshynski he wouldn’t have made such a call. But in a 4-0 contest?
The league, in Peel’s mind, wanted the call made for the sake of “game management” to ensure a one-sided affair between two rivals didn’t get out of control.

Not that a lot of us didn't already know that "game management" comes down from the highest of league offices.

I can see that what Peel said was kind of wrong (in the sense that "rule discussion is evil in the eyes of the NHL!"). In all fairness, however, I think that everything else that was being criticized shouldn't have been.

I think that the NHL needs to let the on-ice officials "grow up". Right now, they can't talk with the media without the media getting permission. Lessen that rule. I think the officials are aware that the words they say can be used against them. Don't say anything that you clearly shouldn't say, and I don't see a problem with that. Perhaps have a lot of what's said go off the record, in case one thinks that it could land them in hot water.

As for the picture... I don't see a problem with that, either. It's an innocent picture. If it was that, then I think that someone clearly doesn't have their priorities in check.

Hell, I give props to Peel for doing this. Clearly he's a rebel.

(If you don't know what I mean by that, understand that he was in the middle of a social media experiment this past summer. Tried Twitter out in July and lasted about 24 hours until he left due to the CBA. Did kind of good holding his own, too.)

Have we ever heard an nhl official publically acknowledge "game management"? This the first time?

Maybe I'm reading the term "game management" a bit differently, but I don't see the issue with what he did or said, if I'm understanding right.

You have a 4-0 game that's a serious risk for turning into a 70s Flyers game. That's when the ref is expected to use some judgment to try to calm things down a bit before they get out of control.

when is the last time that happened?

I think the integrity of the game is at risk when you have ref's nearly inventing or looking the other way from penalties occurring on the ice to let one side back into a game ... whether its to "calm things down" or to create some false idea of league parity

"Well, we had to officiate the game a certain way because we were concerned that if we didn't, one of the teams would flip out and attack the other team"

It sounds like refereeing a game in prison or something.
