Yeah, that Nyquil guy is alright I guess. I'd like him better if he wasn't always wearing that ugly red sweater.

Once you get that defender to start skating forward instead of backwards, it's over. Most vulnerable in that position.

Val-d'Or forward Mantha named QMJHL MVP - Sportsnet.ca

I don't know how to live in a world where the top Red Wings' talent are all under the age of 35...

To make it worse, they nabbed that dude with the 20th pick in the first round. TWENTIETH.

How the fuck do they do that?

And up until I read that, I was super psyched the Jackets got a 90 point scorer with the 19th.

The Detroit Redwings are one of the best scouting teams in the league. They find tremendous talent, year in and year out.

We had one Red Wings poster back on the old ESPN team forums who claimed our scouting had completely dried up and that we hadn't drafted anybody with any talent for years. This was back around 2009. Sherbert would know who I'm talking about. We couldn't convince this guy otherwise.

:L:L:L i'd kill for your scouts, don't get me wrong, I love Clarke for us, he's good at finding talent in later rounds as well, but yours is amazing.

Let's see, the goal scorers for the Wings last night were Tatar, Jurco, and Nyquist - Let's take a look at where they were drafted:

Tomas Tatar - Drafted by Detroit Red Wings
- round 2 #60 overall 2009 NHL Entry Draft

Tomas Jurco - Drafted by Detroit Red Wings
- round 2 #35 overall 2011 NHL Entry Draft

Gustav Nyquist - Drafted by Detroit Red Wings
- round 4 #121 overall 2008 NHL Entry Draft

/No need to show this to Kevin Lowe, he has six Stanley Cup rings

Did he have even the slightest clue the reason the newest crop of stud draft picks couldn't crack the lineup is because the last crop of stud draft picks still had roster spots?

I've heard a lot of people saying the Red Wings are vulnerable because they have a "roster of AHL guys" with their big horses out.

Yeah, an AHL roster that just beat one of the two best teams in the league last night.

I would love them to do a documentary on the Wings preparations for the draft. Just to hear what the hell it is they look for. I mean how in the hell did they see what Nyquist had in him at 20? HOW? I don't doubt that Rychel will be a good player, but the guy taken after him is already a stud.

As good as the Wings have been at finding fantastic players in later rounds (and they've been phenomenal), they've fallen a bit short earlier in the draft. In the last 20 years they've drafted one first rounder who could be described as an impact player (Kronwall). Granted, they trade their first a lot, but still.

I'm not sold on Mantha as a star NHL player. I think he uses his size and reach in the Q to absolutely dominate. I'm not sure he can do that against men. On thing we DO know is that he'll be developed properly. The Wings have a well thought out development system.

Brendan Smith has also made a good name for himself. He'll be a quiet, by reliable top-4 defensemen for many years to come. Think he will turn out to be a very solid 1st round pick.
