What sparked 49ers second-half defensive turnaround? | CSN Bay Area

What happened in the first half? According to strong safety Donte Whitner the problem was actually what the 49ers weren’t doing. Talking.

I don't want to toot my own horn here because I'm just a fan and I think many on this board know what I think of most fan opinions, but I wondered aloud in the game thread about the possible lack of correct communication in the first quarter.

New and improved 49ers looking to make their own history | CSN Bay Area

“As soon as they got to 17-0,” the 49ers’ about-to-be-much-heralded offensive coordinator said. “I knew we didn’t have to panic or worry, as long as we could go down score on the next possession.”

------

“The first touchdown was really huge, because it meant we didn’t have to panic or start changing things or going away from the plan,” Roman said. “Those were big.”

Notes: Davis re-emerges as part of 49ers' plan | CSN Bay Area

Referee Terry McAulay, much to Harbaugh's displeasure, upheld the call on the field.

"Saw the replay," Harbaugh said. "Saw the ball on the ground. Saw the ball moved. That is what the referee said to me, also that he had control of the ball. I don't know how with those two things happening it can be a completion."

San Francisco 49ers ? Niner Insider Blog ? SFGate.com » Atlanta slowed Kaepernick, S.F. sped away

“That’s the read-option, man, that’s what it’s designed to do,” Falcons safety William Moore said. “Stall you for a minute, and for a fast, physical defense, to take them off their game.

“They did an excellent job, they’ve been doing it all season. They got it to perfection.”

San Francisco ran for 143 of their 149 yards in the last three quarters, thanks to adjustments to how Atlanta reacted to their formations.

“They figured out our check,” DeCoud said, “and once they saw us make our check, they would make another check. It was a game of chess out there.”
