Hi folks, you know I am always open and receptive to the way the league tries to whore up, I mean gain new followers. I think I have a great idea which would take a nostalgic look back to the games beginnings and yet keep the excitement of today's action.

I present, the NHL Heritage Classic. Play the games in old arenas!

Built to house hockey tournaments way back in 1941, the Washington Coliseum eventually became famous for something else altogether.

Play a Caps-Pens (for some reasons its always got to be the Pens) here! A nod to the past and a wink to the future!

I know it looks bad, but its not really any difference than Nassau Coliseum and the Islanders just stopped using that.
I bet there are a lot of older arenas that can be used for various New Years Day games.

Its where the DC Defenestrator murdered 4 of his 14 victims.

Nah, just kidding.

On February 11, 1964, The Beatles played their first ever US concert there before 8,092 hysterical fans. It started a trend of celebrity association that lasted well into the latter half of the 20th century. Bob Dylan played, the Rolling Stones set the stage alight, and Joe Frazier punched the stuffing out of everyone who came at him. Decline began to set in in the 1970s. In a deeply unpopular move, the stadium was briefly converted into a makeshift jail for housing Vietnam War protesters in 1971.

for a vancouver location, might I suggest the old 1930's era PNE forum ... it also has fallen into disrepute and squalor (ie it recently hosted a Macklemore concert)

I actually attended a San Francisco Spiders hockey game at the Cow Palace in San Francisco. To say that arena is in a sketchy part of town is putting it mildly.

Man, that was a catchy song back in the day. As to the OP's idea yeah it would work. They need to tweak this to maintain interest.

This will shock no one, but I really thought @Comeds was pushing for a Heritage Classic at Maple Leaf Gardens.

And I would totally support that.

Love the Players cigarette ad at the top of the clock :D

I really wanted an old pic with the "Maple Leaf Wrestling" sign hanging on the end but couldn't find one quickly. Back when the Golds were the Reds, the Reds were the Blues, etc.

/drifting down memory lane again

Lol. That is just a couple blocks from where I live and they are currently turning it into apartments. I see it from the Metro platform every morning.

Now that said, I think a hockey game through the corridors of an apartment building could still be fast-paced and exciting.

Dammit! Now I am starting to think this is a stupid idea.
