It's time to bring up Jesus Montero. I know he's a fat, cheating piece of shit but he's also hitting better then he ever has. As of last night he's hitting .306/.338/.629 with 5 HRs, 3 2Bs, 15 RBIs, and 1 3B (you're not seeing things. He hit a 3B!). Maybe being in AAA has done something to him, put a chip on his shoulder.

I think Smoak's time is done. He is what he is. Let's see if Montero is the bust that we think he is.

Hopefully his solid line in AAA is an indication he's back on the juice. People tend to forget he was not that bad in 2012, it was his terrible 2013 that sent him down. If he really has improved he could be a decent addition to the lineup.

For some strange reason, in 2012 Jesus Montero hit like crazy when he was catching, but was terrible when DHing.

Here are his 2012 splits:
C: 56 G 10 HR .310 BA .343 OBP .498 SLG
DH: 78 G 5 HR .226 BA .265 OBP .309 SLG

Maybe it wouldn't be terrible to let Montero share some time with Smoak.

If Hart can play RF, then Montero makes even more sense. I don't want him at 1B unless it is an emergency. Smoak is a gold glove 1B especially compared to Montero who a stone glove 1B.

:agree:

You want to fix something lets fix the pitching! Right now this offense is scoring and producing with a couple still missing in the line up. They should've walked away last night with there third in a row...

The offense isn't exactly setting the world on fire. They're 28th in OBP, 25th in runs and 24th in SLG. They can use an upgrade.

Pitching has a chance to fix itself when everyone gets healthy (if everyone gets healthy). I was yelling on boards in off season that you never have enough pitching and all I heard was there was no room for new pitching because of all the rookies..blah, blah, blah. Rookies are bonus players and not foundation players to start a season. I also said we need more relief pitching because what was returning was not good for the most part. I liked Farquar (sp?) coming back, and Medina for 6th inning duties, but the rest scared me. Rodney was never my first choice. I like Balfour and even mentioned K-Rod as a cheaper late inning guy. I wanted Jessie Crane as well. You never have enough live arms in your pen. Some of our best years, if you can remember back that far, had shut down pens. I remember the motto was, 'Make it a 6 inning game' because the pen would shut down the last 3 innings.

I've seen you say the don't rely on rookies thing a bunch of times but it's not like Paxton and Walker didn't throw 150+ innings with some MLB innings in there. There was no reason not to pencil them in. You can't predict injuries.

I completely agree about the bullpen. Anyone could see that disaster was coming.

From 1995-1999 the Mariners would have more success if it wasn't for the clusterfuck that those teams called a bullpen!

Those stats are based on for what's happened in the last three weeks, not what's going on in the past couple days. Time and time again over the past decade is this team doesn't like the way a young player isn't improving at the plate they send him down, that hurts them more then letting them work it out up here, Montaro has no spot up here, he can't help defense wise, and to be honest I don't think he would hit with a crap up here...

You want to adjust the line up? Fine you run with what you got until Mid May, players go through ups and down at the plate best example I can give is Edgar, horrible hitter in the month of April but once May came around ( it warms up around May) he would go on a tear....

The fact Walker hadn't thrown 150+ innings would be one reason not to pencil him in. I am not saying they should not have considered him for an open slot, but make him earn it vs a veteran pitcher to see if he was ready and if he was healthy. He and Paxton both have had health histories and the first big innings year in the majors seem to be the one year where I would tread lightly.

Walker pitched 15 innings in the majors coming into the season and Paxton had 24 innings. Felix had 84 innings his first year. Guys like Avery and Smoltz for Braves each had 60+ innings their first time up as well. Not saying it can't happen, but I wouldn't pencil them in w/o a Plan B.

Anybody that can hit has a spot on the team. We've seen the same thing from Smoak for 4 years now. He gets hot for a week, cold for a month. It's time to pull the plug. No waiting for May. Let's see what we got in Montero. If he's not the teams future 1B at least we'll know and can have a plan next off season.

That's basically what they did with Randy Wolf. Wolf sucks but he's a vet. I just think there's a time when you need to let those guys loose. Honestly, I'm of the thinking that you bring up pitchers as soon as possible because I'd rather them be pitching on the Big club then getting hurt in the Minors (assuming they're ready of coarse).

I meant to quote Nwinaz but I was typing on my phone and must have quoted the wrong one.

Wolf hadn't pitch in how many years? That is just as bad as counting on a guy that hasn't pitch in the majors if not worse. How has bringing up pitchers before they are ready for us in the last, say, decade? We have Felix, and.............. Not trying to argue with you, but history of failure and injuries outweighs success by about a 9-1 ratio in regards to counting on rookie SP's as players you lean on for a successful season. I know there are no guarantees regardless of how you handle young arms, but I like path of easing guys into it for the first year with about 50-100 innings and then gauging from there. Now penciling one in as a 5th starter with a clear veteran backup plan behind them, then fine. Again, all speculation on my part but it has yet to work with the latest guys like Pineda, Paxton, Walker, Ramirez, Maurer, Beavan, Morrow. Oh well, it's only a game.

How many people had to fall down or run into a wall for Montero to get that triple?
