The Selection Committee is going to reveal the current top 16 today at 12:30 on CBS. It will be intriguing to see specifically where teams like Michigan State, Cincinnati, Rhode Island, North Carolina, Kansas for a variety of different reasons. Either way this should give us a little insight into what the committee is thinking.
Here's my stab for the top 16:
East Regional(Boston, MA)
1. Villanova
2. Michigan State
3. Clemson
4. Texas A&M
South Regional(Atlanta, GA)
1. Virginia
2. Cincinnati
3. Purdue
4. Tennessee
Midwest Regional(Omaha, NE)
1. Xavier
2. Kansas
3. North Carolina
4. Ohio State
West Regional(Los Angeles, CA)
1. Auburn
2. Texas Tech
3. Duke
4. Gonzaga
Top 16 "S" Curve: Villanova, Virginia, Xavier, Auburn, Texas Tech, Kansas, Cincinnati, Michigan State, Clemson, Purdue, North Carolina, Duke, Tennessee, Ohio State, Gonzaga, Texas A&M.
The top 14 IMO is pretty clear, in some varying order. After that it gets tough. I went with Gonzaga and A&M, the other two schools I thought about were Arizona(leading the Pac 12) and Oklahoma(6 Q1 wins). So it wouldn't surprise me if they showed up on the screen today.
The 4th 1 seed is also very tricky at this point. I went with Auburn ahead of the #2 seeds because they are in sole possession of 1st place in a top 4 conference. Have a 22-3 record(compared to KU's 19-6). Have 5 Q1 wins(compared to MSU's 3 and Clemson's 4). And they have a better SOS and OOC SOS than Cincinnati does. While having the same amount of Q1 wins.
This is why today will be interesting for a team like Michigan State. They will more than likely be a top 4 team in both polls come tomorrow, but they simply don't have the amount of quality wins that the teams ahead of them do. I'd really like to see Clemson ahead of Michigan State, but I don't think the committee will do that, despite Clemson having a significantly better resume.
