NFL Media analyst Bucky Brooks indicated that he believes Eastern Kentucky DE Noah Spence is "going to be in the conversation for the top 15 [players selected in the draft]."

"His ability to rush the passer, first-step quickness, dip and rip, the bend and balance that you see him turn the corner with," Brooks said on the Move the Sticks podcast, "to me reminded me of the same thing I saw from Von Miller when he was at the Senior Bowl years ago." The 6-foot-3, 261-pound Spence was considered a consensus winner of the Senior Bowl week by draft analysts, with CBS Sports' Dane Brugler besting Brooks Top-15 talk and slapping a "top-10 talent" label on him. "Everyone wants a closer. A guy who can close out the game (with a sack) when you have a lead. Noah Spence is the best closer in the draft," Brooks concluded.

If somehow he is there at #21 and SM drafts him, does that mean it would be the final nail in the coffin for Murphy? gk, I need your thoughts.

Highly unlikely. Your evaluation of Murphy is skewed. All you look at is sacks. There is more to the OLB position than that, which is why Smith has yet to start a game and Murphy does. Murphy was a league leader in pressure, and he plays the run much better than smith. If you didn't notice, stopping the run was a huge issue for us last year. He also plays on almost every special team, something that smith doesn't do.

3-4 OLB's have to be good pass rushers. Murphy is just an average player. For a 2nd round pick to be a career backup doesn't sit well with me. But it will be interesting if SM grabs Spence and signing back Galette. I think that sends a powerful message to Murphy.

Well if they sign Gallette, what message does that send to smith? Gallette is a pass rushing specialist.

lol. Smith was a high 2nd round pick and produced. I think he is in higher praise than Murphy right now in the organization.

Ok. Then why re sign Gallette? Why didn't smith start last year toward the end of the season?

I have little doubt smith may end up a better player than Murphy. He is already a better pass rusher. But he is not, yet, a better OLB. He has to be able to play all 3 downs. He is a liability against the run. But just because he may turn our to be better, that doesn't mean you don't need depth. Murphy will be on this team and will contribute. Once again, you get hung up on draft position after the fact. To what end?

Yes and no.

If your 3-4 DEs are playing 2 gap principle (Dick LeBeau's preference)...most likely they are not going to be big pass rushers...in that case...the OLB MUST be able to bring the heat.

If the DEs are a little more agile and only play 1 gap, they are more free to pass rush...the better guys can get you 4 or 5 each.

PIT got 47 sacks this reg season and maybe 15 total from the OLBs and that's 4 rotating about 35 snaps a game.

A lot of Steeler fans want to throw Jarvis Jones under the bus b/c he's not a dbl digit sack guy, but when you look at his body of work for the season...had a int, PD x2, FF, FR x2, 2 sacks, several hurries...he's not a stud but he can play.

Not budding in on the Murphy talk, no clue there...that point on the 3-4, if you have the great edge horses like Von Miller, you're lucky.

jy19 if we take Spence at #21 overall if he is there that is a wakeup call to Murphy not Smith. Gallette is going to be resigned b/c he is cheap and pass rushers are move valuable than run stuffer OLB's who play special teams.

Moving him to the dline would be the right move but at the same time Smith makes sense there also

He is the best pass rusher in the draft. Im curious to see where he goes. Was SM in Seattle when the Hawks took Irvin in the 1st round? Just curious.
