Finally watched the television recording of the game last night - I had caught the game on XM radio because I was on the road on Sunday. Anyway, I thought Dalton was impressive. They gave him a limited gameplan and didn't ask him to do too much, but he really executed well for a rookie. He seemed to see all the blitzes, make the right call, and he doesn't get happy feet in the pocket. He was 10-15 and two of his incompletions should have been catches.

The downside to his game is that he either can't or won't be asked to throw much further than 10 yards very often. Maybe they don't want him hit, or maybe they are concerned about his accuracy. Unfortunately his two starting receivers are probably more suited for a vertical passing game, so it's not the best match.

Dalton could be a poor-man's Rich Gannon and really succeed in a WC offense with the right receivers around him. Here's to hoping that we don't completely waste AJ Green's potential with 5 and 6 yard routes.

I compare Dalton to Chad Pennington. He actually may have a bit better arm than Chad, but bottom line is that he's going to be a game manager. He's smart, and he knows what he's doing. He's not overly gifted with his arm, so he's got to be savvy. He'll make those throws downfield more as the season progresses, too. Once he starts to develop a real rapport with those guys, they'll be able to open up the playbook.

don't think the Green pick can be seen as a waste for us. Dalton caught him long in the preseason, so it is possible. we have a ball control offense, but now we don't have veteran star wr's demanding the ball, so we'll go with it. plenty of wr's have been successful in similar scenarios.

This is true, but we didn't need to waste a 4th pick if this is what we're going to use him as.

I don't believe Green was a wasted pick, and I do believe as time goes on Dalton will prove his arm is strong enough to get the ball downfield. Right now the pass protection is shaky at best, and having Dalton wait for the downfield routes to come open may prove costly. Sooner or later though they are going to have to prove they are a threat to go downfield or the defenses will simply come up and take away both the run and the short pass.

If Dalton is our QB for the next 10 years, and he never develops the ability to consistently hit the long ball - which he came into the NFL with the knock that his arm strength and accuracy were lacking for the long ball - then imo it will have been a wasted pick. You've wasted one of Green's biggest assets in getting open and down the field.

And how about that spin move he put on Haden on the holding play that would've otherwise probably been a TD. Just beautiful.

That is the exact time in which Green or Simpson simply runs by their coverage and Dalton throws it up down field for Green or Simpson to go get it.

Green will most likely not get used as much in his rookie year as he will be the following year. Dalton is not demanding first round pick franchise QB money, so realistically speaking, the franchise QB tag is his to earn or lose, it's not his just yet.

Green is not a wasted pick, (unless you count Brown turning down the trade from ATL)

Green is a Moss type. He's linky, fast, and acrobatic. He's not Andre Johnson. He's not Calvin Johnson. He's pure finesse. He's not a WC offense WR. It was a bad pick for this offense.

Dalton is a limp wristed Nancy. He can't play the Browns every week, unfortunately. It's going to be ugly. Andy Dalton will not be the starting QB in 2012. He's simply not good enough.

There are some games on the schedule that realistically should be ugly, but it was a pleasant surprise that week 1 wasn't as ugly as anticipated.

I was actually impressed with Dalton. He made the throws that was asked of him. Still gotta see if he can throw the ball downfield with any velocity and accuracy. If he can prove that he can do that I'll start to buy in...

Cincygrad and Cincyfan hit the nail on the head. The Chad Pennington comparisons are spot on. Smart kid, takes care of the football, can win games in the right system. But not long for a starting gig. He'll be a quality backup in this league. Hopefully he is backing up Matt Barkley for this team in 2012.

As for A.J. Green...absolute stud. I see him as a Moss or lankier Larry Fitzgerald type. He'll produce no matter what offense he's in or who the QB is (he proved this in college), albeit not to his fullest potential.

If we go 7-9 or better Dalton is starting in 2012. We need OLINEMAN people.....a 1st round MAULER at guard....We need a high round safety....and another corner. We also need a back in waiting for Benson.....

I think Dalton will get better.....Brees and Rodgers looked the same as Dalton in the 1st games and 1st seasons...even though Rodgers played only in preseason but they looked very similar....as well as comparisons to Pennington
