First things first. Versteeg and Zherdev, goodbye. Adios.

Second thing, which is going to be tough.
Lose Pronger

Most will be against it, but he frees up a shit ton of cap. Don't know what kind of D men are available, but get a Mezsaros to take his spot.

Use the rest of our money on the crease.

But this is all too good to be true.

I'm all for dealing Pronger, first thing I think Homer should do is call Burke up and see what they can work out. While we're at it get rid of Leighton and Shelley(if we can).

I'd also look into trading pretty much everyone outside of Mez, JVR, Giroux, Coburn, Bob and Richie(cause they won't anyway). Everyone else going should be examined at least. If they can free up some cap space I'd look at making an RFA offer for Doughty(even though LA will match it) and I'd throw some money at Bryzgalov.

Truth is they were built to win and they failed miserably. I'm not 100% sure why the second half of the season was so far from the first half. I don't think it was exhaustion, could have been too many chiefs not enough indians in the locker room.

Other then that, I'm don't even know what to say at this point....

None of this will happen because it is the correct thing, but imagine waiving Shitty and Carbomb. Lose Versteeg and Zherdev like I said. Sign Leino.

I've started my recap of the playoffs and look to the future like I did last year with that long-ass blog thing. Halfway through page 4 on Word and still going strong. I'll post some time this weekend. It'll be a realistic view of what gets done, but if we're just playing out fantasies...

-Versteeg for Vokoun + early pick (2nd?) pre-draft. Just to get rid of him. You know Tallon would love to have him back. Maybe steal puck-wizard Tomas Jurco with the pick (look up his shootout/puckhandling on youtube)
-Richards and a pick (maybe Carle) to Ottawa for Rundblad and Cowen (not a chance, but I can dream! Maybe if they had hired Pierre McGuire as GM as it was rumored a few months ago)
-Not too many free agents catch my attention. Only Brunette seems to fit. PP certainly could use him. I wouldn't complain about Jussi Jokinen either. Automatic in the SO.
-Brand new 3rd line: Carcillo-Holmstrom-Testwuide. I expect that line to shutdown/annoy anyone in the league.

I dont see Versteeg going anywhere. He was one of the better players in the playoffs except the one time he was noticeably out of position. Ive said it several times this season, MATT CARLE BLOWS!!! -8 during the playoffs and reason for the 3rd goal. Hes overpaid and overrated and no one sees it. Pronger will not be going anywhere whether we want him to or not. Zherdev is likely done here. Im not sure if I would want Leino to return, maybe it was his hip injury but he really isnt worth a raise at all.

As far as free agents, Goalie is obviously #1 concern. I dont see Bryz or Vokoun taking a 2-3 year deal so if Homer wants them, hes going to have to commit long term. I liked Emery when he played here. He would be a cheaper option and a upgrade over what we have now. Other forwards I like that are free agents are E Cole, Upshall and Fleishmann. Another name to look out for is Chris Drury if the Rangers buy him out of his contract.

If Emery is the best we can get then we are headed for another disappointing season next year. Time to spend some money on a legit #1.

I really think we could get back to the Cup finals again with Leighton if he were given the starting role and had a healthy, determined team in front of him come playoff time. The effort just wasn't there this time around.

I'm not saying Leighton is a great goalie by any means, I'm just saying that he's been there and done it before and he could do it again with what should really be a stronger team around him.

I'm not at all stating that I don't want the Flyers to go after a starting netminder, BUT if we absolutely had to go with Leighton as the starter and Bob the backup, that would be sufficient with a healthy group of players in front of them that are actually committed to team defense.

This just seems like the tough way to go however. We all want to be able to lean on our goalie occasionally for a change. I just think we hung our goalies out to dry way, way too often late this season. For the most part, our losses were not their fault and our goaltending just looks that much worse when our team doesn't play any defense in front of the net.

I think I figured out why I don't like Carter. He's stupid. He has no 'hockey sense' - He makes poor hockey plays and decisions ALL THE TIME. Things like shooting the puck when he has no shot instead of passing to an open guy. Or not waiting for a screen to shoot. Or not shooting it in such a way to give his teammates opportunities for rebounds - everything goes high into the goalies' chests or gloves. Things like dumping the puck straight to the goalie or not getting it deep enough on attempted line changes, and forcing the Flyers to make a dangerous change if they get to make one at all. He is NOT creative at all. Yes, he has a good shot and he scores goals because he shoots so damn often. My question is how many MORE goals would the Flyers have scored if he had a clue about how the game is supposed to be played? If he picked his head up and made a pass once in a while? If he stopped literally giving the puck to the other team?

* SIGH *

Sorry, Mav, but Leighton is worse than Boosh. IMHO, he doesn't belong in the NHL as a backup let alone as a starting goalie for a supposed Cup-contender.

I am warming to the ILYA idea, although I am still in "Camp Bob"...

Sorry, Mav, but Leighton is worse than Boosh. IMHO, he doesn't belong in the NHL as a backup let alone as a starting goalie for a supposed Cup-contender.

I am warming to the ILYA idea, although I am still in "Camp Bob"...

His stats from the Cup finals run really seem to show otherwise.

8-3 2.46 gaa .916 sv% and 3 shutouts

That was back when our third pairing was dreadful. It isn't anymore if all of our defenders are healthy.

Yes, he appeared to be awful this season but that's simply because he played one fucking Nhl game all year long...lol

Even if it is a new and improved Bob instead, we could make another long Cup run with him too. Our players just have to compete and focus on team defense. That element of our game disappeared around the All-Star break and never returned. Losing Pronger may have contributed to that, but it's no excuse, our players were simply never able to turn it back on.

It's nothing short of a miracle that we even hung onto the second seed. We probably deserved to be playing Tampa in round one and we'd of probably gotten swept by them.

I don't understand how anyone can still want Leighton here. He lost the cup on what is probably in the top 10 worst goals ever given up in the finals. He's an AHL goalie at best and Homer is a fucking moron for re-signing him(and then signing Shelley & Zherdev to a degree) that money could have been used much better this off season.

Also his stats imo are more due to the team in front of him and their defensively responsible game play, it took till the third round before our 3rd pairing was exposed for being horribly weak. If you ask great goalies they'll give a lot of credit to their d-men for clearing loose pucks and the Flyers did that great last year, this year not so much.

Also as far as free agents go. Please remember Clarkie is finally gone so we should not be spending big money on anyone over the age of 32 now. We have a young core and they should continue to build in this fashion.

I don't necessarily want Leighton around per say (he IS signed however), but he did help lead us to the Cup finals and I won't soon forget that.

Our players were defensively responsible as you say during that run, but they are the opposite of that now, which made for our greatest flaw and the main reason why the Bruins embarrassed us in four games.

Ray Emery, any takers?

Negatory. This is the Turdo argument all over again. Razor isn't an upgrade from what we have now.

We need to bring in a top shelf goalie (hopefully Vokoun/Bryz) for about 2 years while Bob develops as the backup. He's the future, but he's not ready yet.

Your last line sums it up. The onl;y reason I would be against an Vok/Bryz is because I dont want to blow alot on 2 years worth of goalie.

However I would do Versteeg for Bryz straight up.

I'll have whatever he's smoking.

If Bryz was signed it would take a lot more then Versteeg to get him here. However he is not signed and hence you'd be trading for his rights. I remember reading some where that he was thinking of going to play in Russia, so why would you trade anything for the rights to a player who may bolt?

I know there is a lot of Versteeg hate, but he is the type of player who could fit in well here. He plays good 2 way hockey is still young and developing in the NHL. I think most of the hate is from people with tainted views who thought he was going to come in and salvage our horrible 2nd half. He did look a bit out of place at times in Lavy's system, but does everyone forget how long it took this team to get it last year? If moving him helps bring us a goalie then we shoudl trade him, but people should at least be realistic and notice the blame here does not lay on one player alone. This was a monumental team collapse, in all honesty they didn't deserve to beat Buffalo even.
