I can't name one person who is happy with the conferences as constructed today. I still think "ACC" when I hear Maryland and now I have to buy into Cal and Stanford playing in the Atlantic Coast Conference. And I bet there isn't a Syracuse basketball fan who wouldn't love to see the Orange back in the Big East. But football rules all.

And I do think the Uber Conferences will break up, but not for a while. The cost for the other sports teams must be a bitter pill. It's hunky dory for USC and Oregon to send the football team to Rutgers or Penn State. But they have to send the women's water polo and golf teams cross country teams too and that's red ink.

I don't get why they broke up the Big East in basketball. I get that football rules, but it seemed plausible to leave basketball alone.

Notre Dame is an independent in football and ACC for basketball.

The Big East was a mess at the end. I remember them trying to make it a bigger football conference by reaching out to Boise State, TCU, Marshall., even the service academies. I mean who would want a conference that geographically scattered (note, sarcasm). I thought it was a smart move for the "Catholic 7" to buy out the name and reconstruct the conference. Is it what it was, no. But a lot of that was the coaches, Boeheim, Lucky Lou, Rollie, Big John. They outshown Mullin, Pinckney, Pearl even Ewing

And there's always been a different set of rules for Notre Dame
