Huh? Base-a-ball has been bery bery good to many players. Baseball teams throw money around like it is nothing.

Since when did baseball teams start thinking a draft pick cost too much?

Bo Pelini has supposedly promised Monte Harrison a starting spot on Nebraska. Will that influence the decision?

I looked in my paper and did not see Harrison's name in the first round draft(which is all my crappy paper gave me).

I read it was possible for $1,100,000. Let's see, tax man gets his 50%. His agent get's what, 4%, off the top? Monte Harrison cannot possibly have any deductions or anything yet.

Agent 4% * $1,100,000 = $44,000
Tax Man 50%(Missouri and US) * $1,056,000 = $528,000

Leaving $528,000 plus the minor league contract and the minor league lifestyle.

No idea if my blathering is right, but if that is it, then maybe Monte will play at Nebraska and see if he can up his stock. If Monte doesn't want to study, then baseball it is.

Schwarber, catcher Indiana was recruited as a linebacker, and he was the highest drafted position player(not pitcher) and he can sign a contract for $4,600,000 but is expected to sign for less.

I guess in baseball you have to show you can play before you strike it rich. Which is the right way to do it. I just did not realize that newly drafted players were really treated like meat.

I think I would choose college and be treated like royalty, unless I really hated academics.

$500K/yr doesn't sound bad for a kid fresh outta high school.

Unless he's dual sport at Nebraska he can kiss that chance ever happening good bye. Only a small percentage ever make it to NFL.

I would play baseball with the thought that if I didn't cut the mustard I could always go back to college and play football. If he lives reasonably he can invest $350K/yr of that and he'll be big man on campus if he had to return.

It's not 500k a year, it's a 500k signing bonus, he would make the minor league salary (which ranges between 700 and 2,000 a month).

I hope he likes balony sammiches.

A disciplined person (with a roommate) could live comfortably on the upper end of that and still bank the $500k. At a mere 2% interest (typical CD) that's an extra $10,000/yr on top of salary. I'd play for a couple years and see if I stacked up with the big boys. If things look stagnant, go back to college and pursue football and a free education.

The world is his oyster right now.

So minor league players make less than minimum wage?

the salaries are low, but they really should add in the things the minor league teams pay for. Don't they provided food and medical and probably other benefits I can't think of? also you don't need an expensive apartment, rent a house with 4 or 5 other players (most minor league teams are in smaller cities so I'd think rent might only be $1000-1500 a month for a house).

what's crazy is that there are 40 rounds. it's people in rounds 10-40 that I don't understand why you wouldn't go to college.

oh and looks like Harrison was Round 2 (pick 50). not quite as much money there so that will make his decision a little harder.

yeah but after round 10 an MLB team can offer any ammount as a bonus whereas they are pretty standard and set for rounds 1-10.

Some minor teams provide places to live, most provide medical insurance and some provide meals. It's really dependent on what the minor league team wants to do for players. Also it depends on what level. AAA players make more than AA and AA more than A.

Monte Harrison is physically NFL ready right now.

He is the best athlete Nebraska will have signed under Bo.

Living expenses would probably be the same as anybody in the real world. The league probably provides food and lodging only when they're on the road during the season. Baseball related medical is probably paid for.

It's still doable with a bit of discipline. Like anything else, how bad do they want it and are they being realistic in their chances?

If that's the case he should take the bonus and stick with baseball. An athlete with that description would likely make the majors fairly quickly.

My boys baseball camp coach (family friend) played minor league for 4 years after playing for Auburn in college. I'll pick his brain on some specifics if he's at the batting cage this afternoon.

Well, there comes a time when us fans need to find it in our hearts to understand the situation that these young kids are put in.

So with that said, I just want what's best for the Huskers and myself.
