Okay...

First off..Its usually a mix of stats. With sufficient sample size

But as a individual stat. Do tell me all the starts that are better than ERA?

I usually Go IP, IP per Start, ERA+, ERA.. As Value Indicators (Which in the end all that really matters)

OPS against, Walk%, K% as Ability indicators.

You?

I like to look at WHIP, FIP, xFIP, ERA+, OPS against, and k%.

Sure, One Pitch has always gotten a generous strike zone, but it's never been anything like this:

Agreed to a point. But again there is a difference between Value and Ability

Davish is probably way more talented, but at the end of the day its all about value.

I know with all this new age Saber stuff, we try to decipher and take the "luck" out of baseball. But the thing is.. Luck is just apart of the game. The Defense is there of a reason, nothing wrong with using it. Things like Fip like to pretend all balls hit in play are equal. Simply put, they are not...

So yeah, when I say. Who is better? Track record in terms of ERA+, ERA and IP IMO. Bottom line, Pitchers only real job is to prevent runs.. Sounds old school, but that's how i feel..

And Believe me, I'm huge into all these stats too. Lots of fancy new ways to look at things. More information is usually better.

You can be Talented as all hell, and don't bring value. And that's not good..

LO. So true.

"Someday he will be great. He throw as hard as anyone and he racks up the strikeouts. He has buttloads of ability and potential."

I don't think there's any question about the value Darvish brings.

I wasn't questioning HIS value.

2.97 ERA, 152 ERA+ Across 60 innings IS very very valuable..

But Iwakuma had been better This year thus far. But its only a month and a Half
Things will Normalize in favor of Darivsh most likely.

but I don't need Fip to figure that out...

But to say iwakuma is better than justin verlander cause of ERA is crazy really. FIP and XFIP is a specific tool to predict future performance also which is a way better stat than ERA. The ERA stat is kinda miss leading in my opinion. If you wanna know how good a pitcher is, or could be if he does these things right are, K/9, BB/9, HR/9, and GB to FB rate are good stats

Nobody is saying that except you. But, hey, don't let that interrupt your rant. You're on a roll.

You seem to misunderstand...

Iwakuma Had been better is different than is actually better

The season hasn't even been 2 months dude. Or did you completely miss my point about ability vs Value?

I never denied those stats Illustrate a pitchers ability. I fully recognize the predictive usefulness. (But id prefer looking at other stats over FIP IMO) But the Bottom line is not giving Runs.
