For the record, I think all All-Star games are ridiculous in all pro sports. I think it would be better if they gave these pros the break you get in the all-star game but have no actual game. And you can still award someone to be an all-star so they have that on their career, but it is more like winning an award so you don't have to play in the game.

Although in baseball you could still keep events like the HR derby and what not for entertainment.

But my question is, what qualifies you to be an all-star in the MLB? It appears with the recent Puig snubbing, you must have an overall career of several years packaged together to be considered an all-star and not the first 4 months of that current season to be an all-star. Because if they really based it off the first 4 months, Puig SHOULD be in it considering he is one of the most entertaining player in MLB right now, giving a good storyline into the dog day of Summer months. Not to take anything away from Freeman, he deserves it too, I think Puig should have been in without the fan voting. MLB should have put him in there.

But it appears that to be an MLB all-star you have to have a body of work for a year or so to get that nod?

I don't think this applies to any other major sport.

Well the starters are determined by fan voting. Then the players vote for the bench players and coaches decide on the pitchers.

As for puig. One of the things people not familiar with baseball fall prey to is small sample size. They think that because a player gets hot for a coupe weeks that he's suddenly a better player. The baseball season is long and 37 games for a hitter is a good start, but not deserving of any awards.

Puig has played in under 40 games this season, and in his MLB career. Nobody denies how good he's been in his time here, but one month of stellar play does not qualify you as an all star. You need to prove it throughout the entire first half. If puig is a good as people say he is then he'll have many more opportunities.

If he continues like this he is for sure to make it next year.

But Puig got called up a bit late, so far he is proved his entire MLB career that he is damn good and very entertaining. Isnt that or should that be enough to put him in this all star game? Since everyone else is evaluated on the first half of the season?

I mean since he has played in a shorter amount of time it does make sense he might not get it, but do you think he gets in if he had played since opening day? And say his performance was equally or maybe just a notch below what he is playing right now?

Well here is the issue. First, there's the issue with small sample size. Looking at a small sample size can be very misleading in baseball. Second and in a related matter, puig's peripherals suggest his current pace is unsustainable. He's sporting a completely unsustainable babip of .476, his BB/K ratio is a paltry .19, and he's striking out at a 22.8%.

All these things suggest he's due for regression and that his current numbers are not sustainable. Add that to a pretty small sample size makes it pretty easy to keep him out of the all star game. This is the key difference between baseball in other sports. Performance must be maintained over an extended period of time. Same as a small streak of wins or losses isn't worth getting too excited about.

His teammate Hanley has numbers that are crazy in his 30 games back as well. It's not about having a year, it's about explaining how a month of good play is better than 4 months of good play?

I hope baseball can continue to hold a little longer to something that everything else has went out the window with, and that's letting people prove themselves before they are the best ever. ESPN and young sports fans are trying their best to speed the process up with baseball, Pweeg as an example. Baseball itself has a way of humbling a lot of players which helps, but today we rank someone in sports from top 2 to 50 in rankings day to day. Shit drives me nuts. It's gone beyond crazy in football and basketball. RGIII played one season, has a busted up knee, hasn't even played a 2nd season yet and people act like he is headed to the HOF and already rank him ahead of guys that have proven themselves in the league for more than a season. (just used him as an example, there are tons in both sports)

Sorry, a little rant, just something that makes me laugh and this topic made me think about it.

I agree. they do tend to try and speed up the process, I too get annoyed at the immediate hailing of the QBs like Griffin, Wilson and Kaepernick. I'd find if pretty funny if they all come back and have mediocre to below par seasons next year. But the espn empire will just find a new rookie QB to grab onto and ride.
