"I enjoyed playing against him", "soft on the puck", "very casual". The Flames definitely need better play from him this year if they are to make the playoffs. Maybe Jay should watch this short clip after the pre-game skate to get fired up.

am I allowed to laugh my ass off here?

Yeah, why not? I don't have a problem with what Peca said, although if we look at some stats, Peca recorded 1 goal and 1 assist in a total of seven games against the Panthers (he pwned Jay-Bo)

If Jay-Bo is soft on the puck, then you'd think he'd be pretty high on the list of giveaways, yet if we look at some of the top defensemen in the league in the giveaways per 60 minutes of ice time, it's pretty interesting:

Giveaways per 60 minutes of ice time:

Bouwmeester: 1.58
Keith: 1.62
Pronger: 1.64
Giordano: 1.65
Regehr: 1.68
Phaneuf: 1.77
Boyle: 1.90
Chara: 1.92
Doughty: 2.14
White: 2.19
Rafalski: 2.29
Green: 2.29
Myers: 2.90

I think this is just a case of TSN piling on the Flames (they've been doing that since the re-acquistion of Jokinen and Tanguay) and Peca following along.

i really dont know how they measure giveaways but JayBo has always struck me as timid ... maybe its just his off-ice image tainting things. I heard him once described as a guy who can at times fall into a rut of getting rid of the puck too quickly if you put physical pressure on him early in a game ... stuff like that boils down to self-confidence

Yeah, I think there's some truth to that jstew...Also, when you're being paid big money and you only score 3 goals when you scored 15 goals the previous season, it opens up your play to a lot of criticism. As I said, Peca's comments don't bother me, I just thought I'd produce some stats that don't seem to mesh with his comments.

/I think Bouwmeester knows he has to be way better this year and hopefully he will be...

the stat that kept jumping out at me was when there was talk of the nucks trading for him at the deadline before he went UFA.
the price for that rental was supposed to be Bieksa, + high prospects, + high picks, etc.
at that time, Bieksa had 34 points, and so did JBo.

I just tend to agree with Peca in that Bo's reputation exceeds his actual play.
great skater for sure, and can eat up 30 minutes per night,
but never really controls the game the way you'd expect.

just to balance that out though, i REALLY laugh my ass off when the NHL commercial comes on that has a bunch of players saying "This is our year", and 210 is one of the featured performers. kudos to him for doing it with a straight face..... though his face never really moves, does it. kind of stuck in a cro-magnon frown.

in other news, I am naming my next band "Cro-magnon frown"

I just want it to be known that Myers was a rookie and ROY last season.

That is all.

Classic 210 - On the day he was traded:

Jermaine Franklin (TSN): "Dion, where do you go from here??"

Dion Phaneuf (sullen): "Toronto"

As a former and sometimes on-and-off Panthers fan, all I can do is smile in smugly manner. But you can't see my smug look. So here's a fat cat given one to all the haters.

Wow...There has been quite a bit of fall-out from the Peca segment. Ken King (Flames president) went on Calgary radio yesterday afternoon defending JayBo and questioning Peca's credentials. Bob McKenzie (via Twitter) defending Peca and wondering what all the fuss is. Now Scott Burnside is saying that Peca was right due to the fact that Ken King responded.

The good thing is we're getting close to hockey season 'cause everybody is getting fired up.

I was listening to Nhl live on sirius this morning and they were talking to Chris Therien, and asked him his take on the situation, and he agreed with Peca! Ouch!

i just heard the audio

he called Pecas comments "a low brow approach of ridiculing or laughing at a player" and also that it was in "poor taste"

wha ???

I think he needs to go hire another Sutter

I can't fault King for defending his player, but as a former Calgary Herald publisher, he should know better than most that waging these wars through the media never ends well.

In my opinion, this is just the straw that broke the camel's back. The media guys at TSN (Dreger, Duthie, etc.) have been taking shots at the Flames for several months now and I think the Peca segment released a bunch of pent-up frustration.

but what was low brow or poor taste in what Peca said ? is it just more offensive to King because its a former player making these comments about a guy he played against as opposed to a Tony Gallagher type writer who needs to be taken with a grain of salt

or is because what Peca said was truth?

I think only Ken King can truly answer that question, but because Peca played the game, had a pretty good career and is thought of as a cerebral player, his opinion carries considerable more weight than for example Brett Hull (who had a great career, but just shoots from the hip without worrying about the consequences).

remember Barnaby's comments on how Jokien was a cancer as well when he was traded there. Keenan took exception to that as well.

Yeah, there's that and Dreger fumbled the Jokinen trade back in March of this year as well which Flames mgmt didn't appreciate. Then as we all know, there was the re-acquisition of Olli and Tanguay in the summer and all the TSN panel guys yukking it up in the studio in Toronto implying Sutter has lost his mind etc.

It goes back to what I said earlier, I think King is pissed off at TSN in general and this Peca segment finally ignited the powderkeg.

peca started off innocent enough but when pressed he did get real personal against Jays style.

This is an interesting year for Calgary and will be enjoyable to watch. IF I was a Flames fan I suppose I would be quite nervous about it. But then if I was a Flames fan I guess I would be um.... this is a family board isnt it :)
