Do Your Job!
I was a Viet Nam Era Veteran.
Before I went in, I was friends with many veterans who served in Viet Nam.
One in particular was in a unit pinned down and he was the only survivor.
He came home with nerves so shot his hands shook constantly. He could not function.
I drove him to unemployment office in his truck - he could not drive.
I waited for him out front while he went in to pick up his check.
When he came out, before I pulled away, I asked him if he got his check.
He answered no. When I asked why, he said the lady behind the counter told him to come back when he was sober.
I lost it. I went in and confronted the woman, who called security. Her boss also showed up.
I looked at the security guard and told him he needed back-up.
I asked the manager if he wanted to make the Six O'clock News.
I then explained that if somebody did not get the Veteran his check, I was going to destroy the place and they would make the news. They believed me.
The manager and the clerk went out to the truck with the check and apologised.
This set my expectations of returning home from service.
