I don't think he ever got a fair shake. He was a healthy scratch, sent to GR, played minimal minutes in Detroit, spent a lot of time at forward... all while Scarecsson was lobbed all the ice time he could fuck up. Meech isn't anything special, but he's got good offensive instincts and nice poise on the power play. In my mind, there are some guys out there that Meech could replace for a lot less money. I hope he finds an NHL job and I hope he succeeds.
These things are always hard to read. You see a guy like this play and you think he has all the tools to be successful but it just doesn't pan out for whatever reason. My cousin went through something similar in the 80's with the Flyers. Back and forth to Hershey and they just couldn't figure out what they wanted him to be. He didn't begrudge them either and did manage to win a Calder Cup with the Bears. Then played in Switzerland for a long time and had a decent career.
I do admire the way Meech is handling this. Taking the high road and giving credit to the organization. More athletes should behave this way.
With Ericsson saying goodbye as an UFA that means at least one spot is open next year. Of course Kindl probably has it locked up. After him I would imagine Brendan Smith could be next. Where is Meech on the depth chart in Grand Rapids let alone Detroit?
