or Jamarcus Russell sitting on the LB.
I am very happy about McManus, and while there might be some bumps early on, I think he's a great choice
I hear you about the nickname, lucas and I were appearantly calling him McAnus. Sounds like something you don't want to eat at Macdonalds
My only concern was that McMiss did this same thing in practice last year then was terrible come game play time.
I like that we liked him enough to stick with him instead of just throwing him to the curb. Put him on the PS then brought him back for kickoffs. I think that probably help with his confidence and he has had an entire offseason to work on improving.
If any team has seen and been patient with kickers who turned out pretty darn good after a year or stumbling it might be us.
Overall we have been pretty lucky in our history to have pretty dependable kickers. I am hoping we can add McMiss to that list and he is able to shake my nickname I have given him.
Right- If he has looked better and so on like it sounds like he has I am all for having the best kicker option out on the field.
But I must admit about being patient. Field goal kicking in the NFL and being patient is tough to live by. If it starts costing you games you can't "just be patient"... Kicking is just one of those position you can't really "take time to develop" because you can't just throw the vet in ahead of him. There is essentially one roster spot for it. (Sometimes 2, but you want to avoid that as much as possible). It's isn't like the rookie WR or DL who you can sit around and be patient with because you don't need them to come in right away and perform. We are talking about your kicker, who is going after precious points and often kicking with the game on the line. I am just not ok with being told to "remain patient" He has to come in right away and be consistent. Obviously I am not saying he can't miss a field goal or it's to the curb. But if it's the same song as last year we can't wait around until week 10 to boot him. This is a super bowl contending team. We must have a reliable kicker. There are no excuses around that.
I can agree that we can't wait as long as we did. The great thing about the kicker position is it is one of the few that has some decent guys just hanging out on the street that can come in and do pretty well. I would say if by game 4 we are still seeing the same results as last year then it would be time to start looking elsewhere. For me though I like to put percentages and if he is kicking something like 80% then I think that is about where I would like to see him at this year. That isn't an outrageous percentage. It still puts him about middle of the pack field goal kicking wise but it does show improvement and gives the Broncos also a great leg on kick offs.
