Its too late......he can't stop the run. He can't rush the passer. He isn't a coverage guy. Cut the cord ans seeif you can get a 5th rd pick for him.......if you can grab it without laughing

I'm game for any him playing any position that doesn't have lining up vs a O-lineman.
DE :laugh3:
Hell I'd try him out at safety.

I kind of tend to agree.

I'm holding out hope for him, but let's be realistic here... what are the odds that he turns into a great NFL linebacker?

Slim... VERY slim.

If the offensive linemen keep blowing past the defensive line and 300 pound linemen are blocking linebackers again, he will fare as bad as the linebackers last year. Like I said before, the one advantage he has is the bears did not do a mark anderson and have him get up to 280 to play defensive end. I did see Shea falling back in coverage in some blitz packages, but we see pepp doing that too. When they blitz like that, it has really no blitz look since you are not overloading anyone, you are still sending the same 4 or 5, just smaller guys. I think Shea will still end up standing up and rushing the quarterback when the "hybrid" part of the defense comes in on passing downs, and if they are not going 3-4, it probably means he is a "third down" player.

The kid is a gifted athlete with top notch speed.

I think he would excel as a 3-4 LB

I agree, which has me wondering (since the beginning) why he can't play a Mike in a Tampa 2. He has the speed to cover the deep side of the field, side line to side line speed, and the size to hit holes up the gut.

that's my hope anyway. Now if he has what it takes between the ears... That remains to be seen.

Probably true. The more I think about it, the more I am actually starting to think we are more screwed up on our roster at LB than DL. At least with DL, the problems are obvious, and mostly are a blank page that can be filled as needed. LB is a different story.

Linebackers are way more screwed up. If we are a 4-3 team, we basically have 3 guys who should be weakside LBs (Briggs, Greene, Bostic) and one guy (McLellin) who probably also would best fit as the weakside on a 4-3 alignment but they may try to stick him as the Mike. If we have a 4-3, realistically then we had a logjam at weakside, an unknown commodity in the middle, and no one to play strongside.

If we go to 3-4, it would probably make sense, but it wouldn't eliminate the problems. Yeah Shea is the obvious rush LB, but Greene is the logical other choice for outside meaning Briggs has to become a 3-4 ILB late in his career and you are suddenly totally overpaying him, which is one of the whole points of going to a 3-4 to avoid. Bostic being your other ILB.

In a way, this talk of a hybrid makes less sense than just going one way or the other. Two half-baked attempts at scheme fits are not better than one fit. I think what really bothers me is that last year's LB draft they took two guys who in a 4-3 really are best suited to the same spot (as the eventual Briggs replacement). They are better suited as 3-4 linebackers also because their skills mesh a little differently. So if they are going to go to a 3-4 then just do it already and stop monkeying around. If they aren't, they they basically just used the last 2 years worth of high defensive draft picks drafting guys who don't belong in a 4-3.

Which is why I say he can be a singletary type run stopping linebacker if he plays in the middle. Sideline to sideline, no backtracking.

We can all see we have personnel for a 3-4, but for some reason they want to make this work. You take the comments of the gap defense, it really does not matter if you are in a 3-4 or 4-3, the front 7 are dealing with the same gap responsibilities, so I dont think they are ruling it out, just the twits on twitter are pushing its still gonna be a 4-3.

Who knows. He could end up the next hall of fame MLB.
Just glad he doesn't have to line up vs a O-lineman.
Wish him the best.

I still think he lacks the strength to shed blockers, but maybe on the edge or in coverage he can get something done??

Gotta give it a shot. He clearly isn't cut out to play DE, and his trade value is probably next-to-nothing, particularly versus what he's being paid..

Our LBs are a mess right now....Bostic and Greene looked lost all season...DJ is injury-prone...Anderson is average.

Man, I can't wait for FA and the draft.

You want to know something, everyone who plays LB is having this issue. Willis in the playoffs, I watched a Guard maul him on a run play, took him out of the play. From what I've read this year, the movement of the Ref from behind the D line to behind the QB has allowed the O lineman to hold LB'ers more with far less penalty calls. Literally bear hugging the LB'ers for a brief time, time enough to keep them out of disengaging and moving toward the ball carrier.

But, Shea has had a least a year of trying to shed O linemen... He has practiced, heh.

DJ and Anderson were both one year deals. Neither should be coming back unless they miss big in the draft again.

Pretty sure the point you are making, is if the defensive linemen do not tie up the offensive linemen, every linebacker in the league is gonna get mauled. Linebackers should be shedding blocks from tight ends and running backs.
