It's finally over.

Maryland and the ACC have finally settled their exit fee dispute. The ACC receives no payments from Maryland, but the ACC gets to keep the payouts it withheld from Maryland which total $31,361,788.

Maryland, ACC settle fight over exit fee; conference will keep $31M - CBSSports.com

It seems fair. Maryland only wanted to pay $20 million, and the ACC wanted $52 million.....the settlement is for $11.36 million more than what Maryland was willing to pay, but significantly less than the extra $32 million the ACC wanted.

The divorce is finalized.

Time for football!

That is a HUGE win for Maryland.

And it opens up some interesting thoughts on realignment again.

Maybe even a Grant of Rights is not ironclad either.

I don't believe Maryland will be "paying" anything. The $31M is the amount the ACC has witheld in revenue share ever since the Terps announced they were leaving the conference.

That is still paying.

It's a drop in the bucket considering what they will receive in leaving the conference for greener pastures. Their AD is completely broke. Reminds me of Colorado.

Maryland for Louisville.

I don't see how this isn't a win for the ACC, honestly. It is a win for the B1G as well because they get the DC market, but the ACC has that already with Virginia Tech and UVA. Add in a team that is on the rise in football and a basketball premiere program and it works out well for them. When it comes to talent level, there is no comparison.

Not sure why they were fighting Maryland leaving in the first place. What would the ACC realistically lose?

They were trying to set a precedent. If they were able to hold the $50+ million penalty for leaving the conference, then it would be a deterrent for others to follow in future realignment. This all came about during the last major realignment when FSU, Clemson, VT, and GT were considering (or rumored to be) leaving the ACC due to the conference higher ups catering to basketball and Tabacco Road. All of these teams where interested in the outcome of this lawsuit.

Lousiville brings decent athletics. But, the real loss is the market value.

I think the ACC is grossly overestimating the penetration of Hokie and Cavalier fans in the Baltimore-Washington marketplace. They are secondary teams in that market.

Richmond and the Tidewater cities, no doubt are clearly dominated by UVA/VaTech....but not as much Wash-Baltimore....

Tech is about 4 hours away.
UVA is about 2.5 hours away.
Maryland is literally only about 8 minutes away.

That is just the DC area. Maryland dominates that area, but at least has some competition with Georgetown, GW, VaTech, WVU, and UVa. The mountaineers might be the 2nd biggest group behind the Terps.

As for Baltimore, those other teams are practically invisible in that metro region.
Maryland has complete market saturation in the Baltimore Metro.

...........

The Big 10 might have picked up a dog athletically right now. But, they made a great financial grab.

The Big 10 picked up the clear market leader of both DC (5 million) and Baltimore (2.5 million) metro regions.

Despite the fact that UVA and VT are not located in D.C., many of their alumni come from the D.C. and northern VA area. VT has branch campuses and research facilities in northern VA. A recent edition of the Virginia Tech Magazine (Alumni Association) reported roughly 15,000 VT alumni living in D.C./Maryland. I am sure UVA probably has higher numbers given the number of lawyers and politicians who have come out of UVA.

Virginia Tech Living Alumni = 220,000; Endowment = $590 Million
Virginia Living Alumni = 200,000; Endowment = $4.7 Billion
Maryland Living Alumni = 240,000; Endowment = $412 Million
Louisville Living Alumni = 130,000; Endowment = $721 Million

Baltimore is more of a pro-sports town despite the number of Maryland alum. Louisville and the entire state of Kentucky are college sports fans. I think this turns out to be more of a win for the ACC than everyone thinks.

Lets just call a spade a spade here, if VT carried any tv market other than uncle Vernon's big screen in the barn that the whole family comes over to watch after bath time in the crick then the SEC or BIG would have scooped them up in the last round of expansion and used that market in negotiations for their new network. VT don't bring chit as far as a tv market, that is why you are stuck in the new BigEast making chump change and not playing in the $EC east right now.

VT brings the DC/Baltimore market..

yea, prolly brings Philly and NYC too :pound:

I would contend...

That the B1G, as it is presently constituted, has more "living alumni" (and their families) residing in the major Eastern metros than any other conference.

Michigan has over 500,000 living alumni. It's estimated that less than 50% of them reside in Michigan. Ditto MSU's 500,000...and Ohio State's 500,000...and on through the conference line. No other conference in the country comes close to the B1G for total living alumni.

btw...glad the Maryland shit's been settled...looking forward to visiting both new B1G schools (mmm, crab cakes.)

Population of W.Va = 1.8M
Population of Virginia = 8.2M
You do the math.
It is no secret that VT fans outnumber UVA fans throughout the state of Virginia and it is no secret that the SEC was courting VT back before they added Mizzou. VT turned down the opportunity.
