To me, Martin Brodeur is the Brett Favre of the NHL

Just look at how their careers ended - Favre was one dumb throw away from the Super Bowl with the Vikings, Marty was in the Cup Finals. Should have gone out near the top.

The next season, Favre ends his career on college stadium field on a Tuesday night make up game and Marty was a backup that should have hung them up and instead took a flier for a month with the Blues. Both shitty ends to legendary careers.

With that being said, Roy>Brodeur :yahoo:

Didn't Brett Favre's career end with a picture of his tiny dick?

I honestly think this "tarnished your career" thing is almost never true.

He will be a first ballot Hall of Famer. He is and will be considered one of the best to ever play his position. He holds an absurd number of career records for goalies in the NHL. He will be beloved in New Jersey and among Devils' fans for bringing them a couple Cups. That's how people will remember him regardless of what he did with his last couple seasons and I think that generally applies to most of the greats.

I understand what you mean, but I don't think it matters all that much what players do in those last couple years at the end of the day.

Exactly. Chelios didn't tanish anything by being a healthy scratch with the Thrashers...

Brodeur was there when it mattered in 2002 while Patty Wah was back in Quebec watching his son play in a pee-wee tourney.

I dunno. 4 Cups does it for me. The Devils were also unbearable to watch during their Cup years, while the Avs were always fun.

The tweet prior to that one, just so it doesn't confuse anyone:

so if a Blues goalie gets injured down the stretch ... Marty comes back ??? :L

When do the Avs put Mario Tremblay in the rafters, it's his buffoonery that led to the Avs winning both of their Cups.

Shades of Alfredsson last year. Was it really worth it to play just a couple more playoff games?

That seems to have been patched up pretty quickly, though Alfie didn't immediately join another team's FO.

Alfie knew he could still play at the highest level and proved he could. Brodeur thought he could still play and proved he couldn't. Can't blame Alfie for chasing a Cup with a roster full of his fellow Swedes.

Favre's career ended with his tearful retirement press conference in the belly of Lambeau Field. ...At least, that's the way I'm trying to trick myself to remember it.

Why was Alfie under the impression it was 2008?

Maybe it's just me, but I'll always remember him as a Jet.

Fair question, but also fair to consider that Alfie could not predict the rash of injuries that bit the Wings last year. Who knows where the Wings would've been if they would've been even close to full strength for even half the season. Probably higher than the 8th seed and would've avoided that bad first round matchup with the B's.

The last several years he wore a Packer jersey the team gave him a few months after the season to make his decision. There was speculation of waffling during that time, but he never really made a public decision to retire until that tearful press conference I cited. It was immediately after that press conference that the retiring and un-retiring commenced every successive year.
