Chuck Landon: Marshall recruits disappoint this year | The Herald-Dispatch

A couple of interesting points from his column…

After the most successful season of Doc Holliday's head coaching career at Marshall, Herd fans expected a banner recruiting class.

Why wouldn't they?

After a 13-1 season including Marshall's first Conference USA football championship, a Top 25 ranking and a dominating bowl victory, the fans' expectations heading into National Signing Day were legitimate.

I think he nailed it with this…

There also weren't any 4-star recruits such as Kendall Gant or A.J. Leggett. But guess what? There wasn't a single 4-star signee in all of C-USA. In fact, there were only five among the 60 G5 schools.

Why?

The total cost of attendance allotment already has begun to widen the gap between Power Five and G5 schools. Simply put, a 4-star recruit will get more money by signing with a P5 school.

All those factors combined to make MU's Class of '15 fall short of expectations.

And nobody saw it coming.

Maybe a Marshall fan…. or someone who thinks a program relegated to the G5 can compete… never saw it coming. But, those of us who are thankful Luck got us to the Big 12 so WVU could stay relevant… knew what could have happened to the football program.

With the autonomy vote, the gap will only widen. And, the G5 schools will become less competitive than their current status.

G5 schools will need to find a new way to survive in the future. The gap between them and the P5 schools is growing wider. P5 schools will get more pressure to start playing each other more for strength of schedule. The payday games for the G5 will get fewer and farther in between. Programs will go bankrupt or drop sports to balance budgets.

It may be a good idea for these schools to break away and do something completely different. If they were to start their season in April or May, they would have the opportunity to compete with Golf for spring TV money. They could also allow for their season to start with a Spring game against a P5 school.

In the meantime, Moo U and the others will become less and less relevant.

I have said it before and I will say it again, they should combine and make 3 20 team confs...they would have a great coverage area with a lot of the cities and their TV revenue would increase...as long as they keep this relationship with the P5 model it is doom and gloom at those schools.

One thing I do not understand about the have not's is why they even want to be involved with the power 5 schools...Marshall could schedule 11 P5 schools and go undefeated and they still probably would not get a shot at title. Go do your own thing, you have to do something to increase the excitement about the sport at your level.

The sad thing is that you hit it on the head, Marshall could play ohio state every week and win but still wouldnt get a sniff at the title, this is not just the group of five though, if you are in a "power" league, but lack the name, you wont be there, either. Ohio state had a weaker resume than either tcu or baylor, but because of their name.......:lame: way to pick a champion

I've been saying it for awhile now, PLEASE non P5 schools, play your season in the spring. Start the weekend after the the championship game for March madness and offer everything that the P5's don't as far as a legit playoff ect.

Get the TV coverage, the exposure for your school ( we are all too busy watching and keeping up with our P5 programs in the fall, no room for you there), your TV contract money should be better because you are (college football as a TV product) competing against baseball and???? I don't even know or care for that matter, point is the country has a hunger for CFB but we can only follow so much in the fall.

Marshall for example would get tons, literally tons of crossover WVU fans that would attend games ect. In the spring to support the in state school. I think the same can be said for much of the other programs on that level. It's good, fun college ball, play it when we can watch and keep up with you non P5!

Ok, plea over...:yahoo:
