Quality start = 6+ IP, of three earned runs or less. All other stats related to the start are irrelevant.
Ultra quality start = 7+ IP, of two earned runs or less. All other stats related to the start are irrelevant.

Logan Gilbert has converted 11 of 14 starts to quality starts (QS) including 4 ultra quality starts (UQS). Gilbert's 11 QS is tied for the MLB lead.
Luis Castillo has converted 9 of 14 starts to QS including 3 UQS. Castillo's 9 QS is 10th in MLB.
George Kirby has converted 7 of 14 starts to QS including 3 UQS.
Bryce Miller has converted 7 of 13 starts to QS including 2 UQS.
Woo has converted 4 of 6 starts to QS

I don't have the overall team stats for MLB QS and UQS, but the Ms have to be close to the top in both categories. The Phillies pitching staff has a ridiculous number of UQS so far. They have to be way out in front of everyone in that category.

Castillo and Kirby have to get better.

I miss the good old days when a quality start was going 8 innings and a pitcher had a bad start when he gave up 3. A quality start was either by a Cy Young contender or a guy facing the Mariners.

Yep. The evolution of the structure of a pitching staff, and the modern theory of how to use starting pitchers, has taken some of the pleasure of the game from me. You could see it coming when the media created a stat and a nickname for 9th inning guys, and turned them into sports celebrities.

I wonder if they were that year they had Lee, Hamels, Roy H, and Roy O or how their '24 rotation is stacking up versus that one.

Just to me, the quality start stat is like a participation trophy. IMO going 6 and giving up 3 runs isn’t quality. It needs to be switch to an ok start. The 7 and 2 should be the quality start. But I know I’m in the minority because I’m the old man that hates all these new analytics people who created all these new buzzwords that players and stats always knew. Just an example and I’ll get off my soap box, the ERA+ and all the other plus’. They came up with a new stat to sound all smart when everyone knew a hitter and pitcher in Colorado’s stats shouldn’t be treated as the same as in Seattle.

I could even handle 7 and 3 which would be a 3.86 era for the game. I think that is quality these days. Anything under 7 innings is just sad to celebrate.

Exactly. An era close to 4 to me just isn’t something to celebrate. Not everyone is going to have a sub 3, but when a pitcher does we as a baseball community celebrate them. Putting up a start that is a number 3-4 starter isn’t. And IMO one of the stupid reasons the players were all upset over Snell and Montgomery not getting the Cole contract.

If a pitcher throws 6 innings per start and doesn't miss a start, that's close to 200 innings. Hardly anyone throws that many in a season anymore. I stopped caring about the quality start stat over a decade ago, mind you, so I'm not defending it. Just saying it could be considered more defensible to use now than it was decades ago back when several dozen pitchers were throwing 200+ innings each year. Unless you face the minimum through 6 you have to start a third time through the order to get there and that has become more of an accomplishment to have faith put in you to do that.

I think that is the point. We now have to lower the standards to make these guys sound good vs them actually being good in days past. Sad in my book. And I will never celebrate a guy going 6. That is just silly.

But to counter that, you see lots of analysts praising a guy who in 15 starts has 9 QS. That was my gripe.

As the old man yelling at clouds, I was forced to give up counting wins as a stat for a pitcher but I’ll be damned if I have to give up the ERA

Ya the days of a 20 game winner being something are sadly long gone. It always my bench mark for a pitcher. Apparently I am out of touch.
