Sandberg would immediately become my favorite manager of all time if he waited til there were two outs in the ninth with no one on and a five run lead, then brought in Papelbon and said "can you get one fucking batter" ?

That was an interesting move by Sandberg to bring Manship in though. Maybe he read your post about sticking Hollands in there in a pressure situation in his first appearance and decided to give Manship a chance to walk off the field after making the final out. (Manship isn't a rookie but he's never really had success in the majors). Even if Papelbon gets back on track it would be nice in a year or two to have some guys already on the team that can close out games so they don't have to spend 15 million on someone else's closer again.

And if Papelbon does implode they will still have to pay him all that money for the next two years so they definitely can't afford to get someone else.
