Is there such a thing as Manager WAR? That is, given the same group of players, Manager A would expect to get X number of wins from them, and Manager B would expect to get Y number of wins. Probably totally unmeasurable, but perhaps worthy of discussion.
I think Bochy and Rags have handled the pitching staff as well as anyone. They seem to be able to keep the starters in the right amount of time, neither pulling them too soon or too late, and the handling of the bullpen has mostly been excellent. There is probably some room for debate there, but it is miniscule.
However, Bochy's handling of the hitters and defense is much more debatable. Sticking with his favorites too long, constant tinkering, absolute refusal to manufacture runs. Of course, the last may either be philosophical, or it may be due to having players that cannot manufacture runs, like leadoff hitters who cannot bunt, nor steal, etc.
While Bochy is signed for next year, I wonder whether his offensive philosophy will be helpful for the 2012 Giants, or a hindrance. Does he add to their performance, or does he detract from it?
It seems like Gibson got the most out of AZ this season, even in losing Drew for the season pretty early on. Their pitching was 100% improved. They had some rookies they called up (Goldschmidt) who Gibson stuck with, and he delivered. Last night, leadoff double, followed immediately by a sacrifice bunt. Then the run scored. (Contrasted to the Giants getting 1st and 2nd and no outs, and Eli GIDP to essentially end the threat.)
Gibson pushed the buttons this season like Bochy pushed the buttons last season, and when pushed, they worked. This season, every button Bochy pushed seemed to add another player to the DL.
So maybe it all has to do with luck, anyway.
