I think it was the second intermission where cbc flashed the standing and it was the canucks in 3rd last in the west and i smiled and actually felt hopeful

WE HAD THE BRONZE DAMMIT !!!!

Then they go and win and go from being in a position where they have a 10% chance at the first overall pick to a 2% shot at the #1 pick :L

They cant even lose right :L

Meh, give all 14 non-playoff teams an equal shot of winning the number one pick, issue resolved. The league likes to trumpet parity and has a hard cap, why then do we still have a lottery that favors the weaker teams?

i didnt watch any of this game

I turned it on about a minute before the richardson goal.
Which figures, when I'm hoping for a reg loss

There had a #6 draft pick in their grasp before the 3rd period

dallas wins today and we are out. I see markstrom getting 2 of the 4 remaining starts. I have hope we will lose 3 of those 4 even to calgary and edmonton

someone had the great idea on twitter that of the teams eliminated from the playoffs that the ones that finish best (i.e. in the 9th place) get the 1st overall pick. so they have to TRY To win in the remaining games.

Yeah, I've seen that type of proposal before.

It would reward a team like the Flames who have played hard all season albeit a lack of talent, it would give them more talent in that situation - in some cases that would be a good idea but I think as a league you try to keep it as competitive as possible and make sure the bad teams will not be bad forever

Other thought is "points earned since elimination". Which still skews towards the shittiest teams getting the top pick (as they would have been eliminated for the longest time), but gives incentive to all eliminated teams to max out points after they are done.

Think of it as a socialist system ... The shittiest team getting 1st pick is what parity is all about ... Making bad teams better and not letting the better teams get better

I like the points earned since elimination thing that puckhead mentioned but there r problems ... Ie what if a team gets eliminated game 81?

See what the nba is doing ... Rotating #1's ??? U get a #1 u dont get it again until the other teams get a crack ... 30 years?

Oh hell no, the NHL should not be taking any ideas from the NBA

That's not different than where the 9th team would be ranked under the current system.
The biggest problem I see is the unbalanced conference structure throws it out of whack

Can still implement the lottery system?

They could do one of two things:

Just do what the NFL does and go by worst record(least amount of points in this case) or give the seven worst teams(14 non-playoff teams so cut that in half) an equal chance at getting the number one overall pick?

I would just go full lottery (just first round) with every team getting an equal chance

But this runs contrary to the parity idea of giving the shit teams more of an opportunity to get better

I was going to say something like this in the form of having every non-playoff team getting an equal shot at the first pick, but that's why I only said the seven worst teams
