is he completely washed up? I haven't seen much from him since last year.
if claimed, the team can't use him this year, but he would only cost $800k (half his salary) for next season.

Someone will pick him up. Very cheap option, and would at the least be a capable backup for teams next year.

It seems that now-a-days, goalies are not that hard to come by, and all you have to do is take any kid and slap some pads on him.

2.22 GAA, .926 sv% in the AHL this year, which is 6th in GAA and tied for 5th in sv% behind the worst team in the league. He lied to management about his injury during contract negotiations and got a larger contract than he would have if he had been forthright. As a result, he was in Holmgren's doghouse, and he wasn't quite right after coming back from back surgery and that was all the excuse Holmgren needed to demote his ass.

Either way, he's still the best goalie in the organization and if nothing else, the team plays better in front of him than any other goalie and that's what this move is about.

In a world with tons of doctors visits, countless MRIs/XRays and other diagnostic tools, how the heck did he lie about his injury?

It was a pinched nerve in his back that caused numbness in his foot. So if he ever complained about his foot, they wouldn't think to look at his back for the problem. Made it much easier to hide.

And he had surgery for it? Must've removed the disc. That's something that's really tough to hide I guess was my point. I'm amazed he didn't get in more trouble for that.

I don't know what the issue was in the offseason (whether it was full-blown numbness or just tingling or a gut feeling something wasn't right) or when it started (during the playoffs or in the offseason), but he did play in the preseason and had surgery around mid-October. It didn't come out until that time that he had known about the problem and not told any of the Flyers' staff. I suppose it would be no different than Marc Savard or Ian Laperriere denying they had concussion symptoms in order to play even though they knew something was wrong.
