Not a bad time to step down given questions about Paul George in Indy.

Better to step down now where the new person can address PG situation and directions -- rather than a year from now when new person may take over a team losing PG without a long-term plan.

Bird has been very fatalistic about his health, specifically thinking he's going to die soon.
Whether it's rooted in real health problems I don't know. He's been thinking about resigning for a few years.

To give Larry the benefit of the doubt -- I think it is more that the franchise has a big upcoming decision that will have impact for years. Unless Larry is planning to be around for the long-term, it is better to step down now and have the new folks make key decisions that they will have live with long-term.
